You know if interested check out Watts in Utah, they sell and ship everywhere and have really good deals and they will drop asking prices with good offers. I see they have a few right now.

I wouldn't work my purchase around gears alone. If you can save a grand, you can just spend that money paying to install the gears you want. Seeing Jeeps come and go and having sold plenty of TJs, Jks, H1s, H2s, H3s, FJs and other off-road vehicles I would suggest you buy as much Jeep you can afford and the less signs of off-road use the better.
There's plenty of stock Rubicons out there that have not seen dirt roads. I would focus a search on those vehicles and evaluate anything else that come close. Even if you have to expand your search out of state.
There's plenty of debate, but I do believe out of the box a Rubicon is a great starter rig and needs little to do 90% of the trails out there with ease.
As far as year, I wouldn't do an '07 just because its a superstition of mine to stay out of new model year vehicles.
Manual vs. Auto.... Ive driven both. Love the manual trans, but the auto is easier on the pavement and trails for me. I have zero complains with going to an auto. Im heavy with lots of armor and 37in tires. I dont have much trouble with my 5.38s. But you'll need a d44 (rubicon) up front to be able to fit 5.38s.
Good luck.
