Default Tires

I just purchased Cragar steel wheels 15x8 5x5 bolt pattern 4.0 backspacing. Now my question is what is a good size tire turn run on them. I was thinking 35x12.50x15 too big for rim according to Cragar. Help me out here.

35x12.5x15 would be the right size for a 15" rim, the last number is the rim size taht the tire is made for, it would fit fine

The reason Cragar says it shouldn't be used with that wheel is because of the width of the wheel, not the diameter. Usually a tire that wide would go on a 10" wide wheel, but I am running 33" x 12.50" x 15" on 15" x 8" just fine. A lot of folks will actually recommend it for wheeling. You get more sidewall acting as tread when you air down, and are less likely to lose a bead. The wheel/tire mfgs just don't want you to run a non-recommended wheel combo in case anything happens and you want to make a frivolous law suit. It's a CYA thing as far as I can tell.

I was told you will get uneven wear on a tire that is too wide for the wheel. I she led the specs on the tires I got to see the min/max wheel width they recommended. I'm on the low-end threshold, but within spec.

Why does Cragar say anything over 30 inches will break the rim. That's what's bugging me

You got me there. I have no idea. All I can say is take a look at all the pictures of folks with Soft 8s and thirty something inch tires that have done Moab, etc. Sounds like a CYA thing again, but that one is new to me. It's your jeep and you need to be the one to judge whether to risk it or not, but I am running a soft 8 style wheel from another manufacturer with 33"s.

33 x10.50 15 or 33x9.50 15 will work best on the 8'' wide wheel

I think 8" wide is perfect with 12.50s. I'm running some on 7" wide now and like it this way, and i've had them on 10" wide wheels before and don't like the look or the performance off road. btw I drive 100 miles a day on the interstate with my MTs at 30psi and they are wearing fine.
