Question Thinking of buying my 1st jeep?

Heys guys and gals,

I'm looking to replace my hated 04 Ram 1500, when the weather breaks and seriously looking at a 2012 Unlimited Sport S. I don't do any offroading but i work in surface mine and spend my warm weather, predator and varmint hunting. Is there any issues with the jeeps that i should be aware of that may show up later? I'm trying to keep the monthly payment down to $350 or less, as i'm trying to save up to build/buy a new house. So, Is the Sport S a good daily commuter/ field stomper or should i look at something else completely different? I'm just not in need of a truck at this time in my life but need to have fwd or awd for work and utillty trailers are cheap to buy. Any thoughts?

I would suggest making sure you have the 3:73 gears, NOT the 3:21's for sure.

IMHO yes this would make a fine DD, and weekend warrior in the fields. Nice thing with the sport pacakge you can build on it at your own pace. AND still get yourself into a Jeep rather then a non- Jeep.

08 JKU and its my DD 120KMS every day, wouldn't change a a thing.

Search this site, tons of great info here that will help you....pretty much all you need to know is on JK Forum.

DO your homework, then do it, and don't forget to wave!!

The only caution I would say is that if you truly want to save for a house, you might want to think about another vehicle. Once you buy a Wrangler you will become addicted to spending your hard earned cash on Jeep modifications!

unless you're just wanting a brand new vehicle. I'd try to find a used one with all the options you want.

I don't think a bare bones one will make you happy with your budget on payments.

IMHO a Jeep is a piss poor purchase for someone that should be savng money to build/buy a house. Buy a used honda CiviC get the house, and then get the jeep after you are established. You may not want to hear that, but you asked. The Jeep will come, but set yourself up first!!

If the Truck is paid off get into your house first.... even if that means a year or two..

Then get your jeep.. I think a jeep would be a great vehicle for your needs.

I disagree, one likely expense we will always have is a vehicle. So just budget for it, along with your mortgage.

IMHO, you are on the right track. A Sport Unlimited is competitive with other vehicles, and likely to out-perform them off road. It seems to me the way to go is new. Most used Jeeps are either MODed and run a high price, or have been "well" wheeled and possibly unreliable. Going new may only be a 2-3 thousand $ more than some used models. Lastly, a stock JK is plenty for your hunting needs. The main thing you may want to have that isn't stock is a wench. Mostly for animal recovery, but also self recovery as needed.

BTDT,
Ed

Sounds like maybe you need to find a TJ that has been lightly used to fit your budget. IDK just a thought...

^^ agree and disagree
A down payment for a house adds up alot faster without the Jeep payment and gets one to 20% down faster and away from PMI (a waste of money). then with a solid budget get that Jeep... I owned my first vehicle for 12 yrs. so that was a long time without car payments.
that's just me though.... I keep vehicles till they die..
off topic...

A jeep would fit the ops needs nicely so for the jeep when ever he choices to buy it.
also agree with the winch.... thing, good idea for the recovery of game.
Sounds like a lot of fun.

Although my 2dr "X" is a dd and I commute to work....45 mile round trip everyday, I love it, but the gas it needs is hard to take sometimes. I just try to grin and bear it because I love driving it so much. But at over $4 a gal it gets old to say the least. So you may want to keep that in mind, as it's not the best on gas.....
