Default Switching to 4wd

OK.......I've been on somewhat of a hiatus from the forum lately but need help. This evening I took my 3 lil boys out in the woods to play in mud, etc. I'm not one of the guys that take pride in how much damage I do to my rig, I wash it regularly and do baby her alot. I say that to make the point- I'm not hard on my Jeep. I rode thru the woods in 4h and just hit some holes to show my lil boys a good time for maybe an hour and we started to leave. I come to a complete stop and put it in neutral (I have a manual ) and shift back to 2wd drive as usual and it not only shifts back but the shifter just slides with no notches. It goes back to 2wd (the 4wd light goes off) but can no longer go back to 4wd. Now that shifter just easily slides back and forth like is not linked to anything. Whats up? I wheel with guys that go so much harder than I do on a regular basis and I'm frustrated that I try to take more care of mine and this happens. Mines a daily driver so I play kinda light. Any help is much appreciated.

The plastic clip on the linkage, either in the console, or at the t-case, broke.
There are lots of threads on how to fix it.

Easy to tell if it's the end hooked to the transfer case. Have someone move the lever back and forth while you look underneath where the cable hooks to the transfer case. If you don't see it moving, the clip under the console is the one broken.

Just happened to me on the trail, I fixed it with a ziptie, eraser, and a redbull tab. Hint, don't stop completly to disengage 4hi

Absolutely - though the manual says u can do it stopped you can minimize the chance of this happening if you are moving and just take your foot off the accelerator. (Note, you HAVE to be moving 2-3 mph to get into 4-L)

I apologize for there already being a thread on this. I knew you could switch in motion (slow) but figured I was even safer by stopping. Who woulda thunk

You can shift from 2H to 4H up to 55mph just left off the accelerator and throw it in... you need to be rolling 2-3mph in neutral to shift to 4L. This wasn't the cause though.

This happened to me. I find that my manuel shifts better in and out of 4 wheel Lo if it is in 1st gear with my foot on the clutch. As I am putting it in gear I usually let my foot off slightly.

So got underneath and found the bar off and put it back on. However my shifter is still going back and forth and doing nothing. I'm guessing the piece is broke under the console also, so I have to now take my console out to fix that one? I see no other way to get to it
