I also thought about putting a hole in top, putting a big PVC pipe down in it, and trimming it out around the carpet, the only down side is it would be much smaller space. but it could be water tight, and would be accessible from the interior.

Going monday to the local industrial fastener store to see what I can get for a knobbed or wingnut screws.

To make it water tight , cut your acess cover from the inside, and use a " dry bag" ,nylon coated bag used for kayaking/ water sports .Fasten the lip of the bag to the edges of the " hatch " opening. Re-use the cutout as a lid.

I plan on eventually mounting my small compressor in there for my onboard air setup. Have all the parts just need to conquer the other projects in front of this one first...

I got some Jack nuts (riv-nuts) from Napa, and some wing nuts with electric grommets at the hardware store. If anybody wants part #s let me know. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1377518/2012...2023.14.09.jpg

Fyi, you need to use a tool or make one from flat metal stock to install riv-nuts. It's easy, just wanted to point it out.

Now I can have the tail light off as quick as I can open my rear tire carrier and tailgate.

Used 1/4 bit on light housing, 1/4"-20 Jack nut - Napa part # 665-1059.

I bought 1.5" long wing nuts, they are plenty long, could go shorter, especially on the bottom one. Maybe 3/4 bottom, 1" on top.... Just guessing.

bumped because I want to see more examples of what you guys keep in there. Also... I have a thing for hidden compartments (or just extra storage places I don't know about) and would like to know if any others exist.

edit: I would like to see a kit out there that basically converts the passenger taillight into a door that swings open. Maybe with a lock too.

On the later model JKs, that flaky foam piece has been replaced with a much more solid plastic panel. On my own 2007, that foam piece is all bent and misshapen and I would never trust anything to stay there. Don't know if the later model plastic panel can be adapted to the earlier JKs--it would be nice.

Why would the designers put such a compartment with a false bottom in such a bad spot. It is directly behind the rear wheel where the foam "cover" would get blasted with mud, water, ice, sand, dirt, dust .... AND... road salt.

Would there be any repercussions if I decided to seal that compartment from the bottom? Like with an undercoating? Maybe even spray undercoating all around inside as well. I dont plan on getting rained on topless. And I would add a vent on top (near the rollbar (or just remove the drain plug/grommet) so that the compartment could breathe. I'd like to seal it up to where I could store stuff in there that wont get contaminated by road salt and moisture. Especially metal items that could easily rust up. This is an open question to anyone who would know.

Btw... 19delta... I would coat your shovel and axe's metal parts with oil, vasoline, cosmoline or some other stuff that would insulate it from moisture and rust.

My 2014 JKUR has the piece of foam in the bottom.
