I know of two locally. no, i dont have any specific details as to how. One was taken for a joyride and was completely trashed, it was found in a locally wooded lot and was basically totalled. The other was stolen off a dealer lot, that one i am pretty sure they got back. (It wasnt in the paper, a friend was the service manager there for a while & he told me about it. It came back missing a lot of pieces and they had to put it back together for one of the salesman who bought it off the Ins. co. for next to nothing.)

I'm gonna guess the two were taken with the keys. As mentioned there is a an immobilizer built into the ignition systems on the JKs and newer vehicles. I haven't heard of any local thefts except for one local forum member who said his neighbor saw 2 guys load his JK onto a flat bed. And the flat bed hooked a winch line and pulled the JK onto the lowered flat bed...probably stolen for parts by "professional" rats...

Mine was stolen.
My wife and I went to San Diego over Christmas two years ago. When we came back, we were driving up our street. (only two other homes on that road) There was a fresh foot of snow. I recognized the Rubi BFG tire tread and my heart started to sink. As we pulled into the driveway, more tire tracks, heart sank further. Opened the garage door an no Jeep. Walked in the house and no TV. Our two TV's, my wife's jewelry, my PS2 and my snowboard all gone.
We called the sheriff and within 15 minutes the perps ran a stop sign right in front of a cop. A chase ensued, but they went up a moutain road. The officer was in a RWD car, so could not follow. Then then fled on foot. Never caught. They even had the breadcrumb function on from the MyGig and the Sheriff did nothing.
The county cops are not well respected where this happend and most suspect that they know who did it (the city cops and state troopers are well respected) I guess the one of the sherriffs kids is in a gang. What's strange is that they did not trash our house. They surgically took things they wanted and left everything else intact. The village officer at a near by mountain village had video footage of my JK being used to rob someone's ski condo.
The JK was mechanically sound, but was pretty scratched up. The insurance paid for a full detail, full refinish, all new fenders, a new hard top, front and rear bumpers and new wheels. I only had the shop repaint the JK, then spent the rest on most of the mods in my profile.
That's the short version...
