Spy Shots: 2018 Jeep Wrangler Development Mule

I think the magazines may have this all wrong. I don't think the longer cowl is to hide additional body length, I think it's to hide the gap where the new, rounded, and more angled windshield will fit. Jeep won't mess too much with the rest of a winning formula, but they've got to increase the rake on the windshield if they're gonna get close to their 30 mph target. (They've also gotta add a diesel.)

It a cover to hide the upgraded rear axle. I hope. (EDIT) I need glasses I guess. I looked again, and clearly it doesn't cover the rear axle. Doh. (/EDIT)

I hope that it doesn't get to aerodynamic. I really like the look of my old TJ with the grill that was vertical and not slopped like the JK is. I also like the rake of the TJ windshield. I'm warming up to my JK but I certainly wouldn't want anything more angled than it is now. The jeep that won the war certainly had very few sloped angles.

I wouldn't draw any conclusions at all about the appearance of the next iteration of the Wrangler. This is probably a test mule for running gear, software changes, etc. Stuff you can't see readily. The longer cowl may suggest more room needed for the engine/transmission. Can a factory Hemi option be on the horizon? Not likely, but nice to dream!

(EDIT) I looked again - the windshield angle IS the same as the current one, my mistake (/EDIT) Jeep doesn't need to angle the windshield to get 30mpg using a diesel. This I agree with. The flares are the old ones (reportedly the side markers are moving off them), and obviously the old doors were hacked to fit. The dealers that saw the revealed JL said it was basically the same as the JK, but shared nothing with it, and I take that to mean things like the grill, door handles, mirrors, flares, hard top/soft top system, and bumpers.

Clearly the body is longated so a standard jerrycan be fitted without cutting the jerrycan. In the Wrangler Africa concept they had to cut the jerrycan to get it to fit, it should not be neccesary on the next model
