Default Soft Top Paranoia

After years of watching other people enjoy their Jeeps i finally got my 08 Jeep JK a couple of weeks ago. I opted for soft top.

Now i'm paranoid someone is gonna tear into my baby only to find nothing in there worth taking besides bits and pieces. I've read on here some folks just leave it unlocked but wouldn't the doors be in danger of being taken?
Tomorrow i'm slapping locking lug nuts to secure the tires and the spare. I have the factory alarm to where it goes off ifinya open the doors but that doesn't keep jackasses from cutting or unzipping the top to access the interior. Guess my only option is to get an aftermarket alarm with a badass motion sensor.

If someone rips out the factory radio isn't it usless (antitheft code needed) or something? You guys with the soft top-mygig rigs ...are you sleeping with one eye opened?

Now that I have the hardtop again on this new jeep I keep it locked, but, on the old jeep, all I had was the softop or no top. I always catch a lot of flack for this but ... I leave a $5 or $10 dollar bill in the unlocked center console and make sure that I don't care much for what's left behind, leaving the doors unlocked. I've the lost a $5 but strangely enough, nobody ever took any of the cd's or the odd tool laying around, or any of my recovery gear. The key really is to just not leave much in there of value and leave it open. Most of the people doing the digging are more interested in getting drug money than they are in trying to damage your car - that takes effort and could draw attention. fwiw.

I'm also paranoid, like you. I switched from hard to soft top and haven't parked in my condo's parkade since (if someone gets in, they can do what they want all night long)!

I'm planning on getting an alarm with proxy, however I heard that though it may discourage breaking in, it may ENcourage vandalism, and it's vandalism that I'm truly worried about. A warning chirp may just encourage some punk walking past to say "Oh yeah?" and slash the soft top, just out of spite. Who knows.

Once I have the money, I'll be going with a 2-way Viper with proxy sensor. The alarm allows different levels of security. The shock sensor alone will work if someone tries to get IN through the roof when it's up (ie - don't use proxy with doors on and roof up to hopefully avoid senseless vandalism), and the proxy will come in handy when parked with no doors or roof. 2-way is nice all around, just so that if something DOES happen, even vandalism (ie - slash and run), i might just make it in time

I just have the factory alarm on the jeep..

but.. since I live in a area known for car prowls...

I have a night vision motion sensor trained on where I park at night.

Has a nice little wireless alarm box next to my bed that chirps whenever the motion sensor picks up anything large and warm nearby
(not small and furry if you know what I mean).

It also has a little microphone on motion sensor so I can eavesdrop on the perp roughin up my baby and figure out how far along he is on prying my mygig while I'm pulling the rifle out of my closet. BTW I have clear sight from my 2nd floor bedroom window to jeep

And if I wanted I can warn them from my little alarm box they're about to be shot in the bupkiss with painful rubber bullets??

I haven't had any problems yet...

So maybe a little paranoid.. but I have extra windows in the shed for a quick replacement. I'll be bummed if mygig gets nabbed it took forever to load all those cds... and since I just got my uconnect and voice command sorted out.

I had a set of the locking lug nuts, then I lost the key.. I wne t to the dealership, they said that each set has a different key.. My sales guy who sold me the JK told me ho to get the lug nuts off.. I He then told me that the locking lug nuts aren't stopping anyone from taking the wheels.. People are taking them right off the dealership...

Locks only keep the honest people out, anyways.

I just don't have anything valuable inside and keep it unlocked. If they want the radio, then it's off to Future shop for me!!! ...OR maybe a 'lightly used' Mygig...

It's probably people from the dealership, itself.

Honestly, you can get those locking lugs off but it is REALLY REALLY loud to do...at least on the round Mopar locking lugs. The spline type is much easier. Not that I'm a thief but I am related to some Techs.

Believe it or not, I worry more when my windows are in. If I am going to leave it someplace that I worry about, I'd almost rather have no windows or doors. I dont leave much in there though. Now that I have my Tuffy console I do leave some stuff in there. It's not bullet proof but I think it would be difficult to get into.

I pay my insurance agent to lie awake at night worrying about such things.

If you are still worried, spend your alarm money on extra insurance to bring your comprehensive deductible down as far as you feel comfortable.

i have not had my doors bolted in ever. I just leave the vehicle unlocked and put valuable in the rear storage and lock the tailgate
