Just to throw in for everyone's benefit: The NEW EPA ratings (which will apply to all non-exempt 2008 vehicles) will reflect more realistic driving/testing conditions than the past ratings system did... the end result? Most vehicles will see a reduction in their City/Highway mileage ratings. The Jeep should drop from 16/19 to around 15/18, using the new testing methodology...

FYI: "new testing methodology" is defined as something not arbitrarily plucked out of the lead engineer's a$$, what it is now exactly, we dont know.

yeah it is a Jeep, yes it is as Aerodynamic as an eastside warehouse, but c'mon. 16-20? that is bad considering current technology. i dont expect 50 but 25-30 should be well within reach. This gets better milage than my old truck, and that makes me happy, but it certainly has alot of room for improvement.

Well, you can always improve its fuel economy by lightening it... if you have a 2-door, you can probably get an extra 1-2 MPG by removing the backseat, replacing the hardtop with the softtop (or no top at all), and removing the doors!

oh i do whenever i can! i have the top down and the rear seat out whenever i can get away with it. I am getting good at dropping the top and getting the rear seat/babyseat combo out quickly. whole thing down and out (not counting the doors or rolling the windows up for storage in the jeep) i can do easily in about 5-6 minutes, back together of course takes longer. Like 20 minutes+ (mostly because i am moping the whole time cuz i gotta put my toys away)

It's not the gas mileage that is the problem, it's the price of gas that is the problem. I'm sure there are others out there like me that can remember .25 cents a gallon. Didn't matter what the MPG was. You had a vehicle that sucked it like nobodies business and you had high horse power and you could pull any hill at any speed you wanted to and it only cost a few bucks to fill up. Oh man I miss those days.

What is interesting is how much better the gas mileage is in the Nitros. My boss got one the same time I got my jeep and he gets at least 25mpg just around town. Best I ever got on a long road trip was 18mpg. Now with the 33's I get 15 just about everywhere.

I don't know the weight differences between the unlimited and the nitros but they don't look a lot more aerodynamic than the jeep.

I used to get like 14mpg. Pissed me off!
Now I'm getting 18mpg that includes all city/highway traffic miles. I don't really get too much regular highway miles as my work hours are during rush hour.

But getting around 360 miles at 20 gallons, not bad. I'm going to take a road trip to FL on Tuesday night so lets see what this baby does all the way from VA...but once I enter FL I'll take the top down (will be morning by then) then drive rest of the 345 miles (to West Palm Beach) to see what difference it maeks w/ the top down...

Enjoy your trip. We have one planned next weekend to Palm Coast to see family. I can't wait to have the top off and hit the beach for some driving.

I have 1247 miles on mine. I'm getting lifetime avg. of 22mpg. 60%highway 40%city. i use to own a 2005 dodge 2500 quad cab 4x4 5.9cummins with 4.10rears. Over the 2 years i had it. I avg'd 22 empty and 18 towing 12,000lb camper. i traded it in for the wrangler. went from paying $600 a month to $350 a month. Now i use a tent or hotel. I am really surprized at the mileage with the jeep. I have always owned a diesel but i tell ya this little jeep of mine does everything my truck did (except for the camper) Love the mileage, love the jeep
