So disappointed in my mpg even with low expectations!

with my '11 JKU Rubicon auto w/4.10's and 35's I was getting about 10 mpg around town. Now with 5.38 gears and ProCal I get around 14-14.5 around town and about 17-18 highway. Should improve once I up to 37's since I'm geared so low. Doesnt help my mpg's living in the foothills of the Rockies either

I'm not sure I would believe those stories... and there are also performance mods that can make some difference... and standard transmissions make a difference too..
#1 thing is driving habbits.. I made it back to 17mpg one week by trying to time stop lights, and not brake unless absolutely needed, and on acceleration, trying to keep the engine under certain RPMs, yet in the strongest part of the power band..
Bottom line.. If you truely believe that 20mpg is achievable on a sustained basis.. do the the gas-math.. IF you drive 12,000 mile per year.. the average.. at 13 mpg and $3 a gallon, you'll pay $2770 for your fuel and at 20mpg you'll pay $1800
A savings of $1030 per year.. or $85.00 per month
More realistically.. most people are getting 14 mpg, and hoping for 17 in their wildest dreams... which would only save $453 per year, or $37.75 per month.
AKA a couple hours work per month.
The difference is so small that it's only worth worrying about if you're going to be overlanding, and trying to squeeze every mile out of every gallon for survivals sake.
If you want good mileage.. buy a '00 honda for a couple grand, and drive it everywhere you don't care about looking cool... then maybe you'll be saving a days worth of wages every month... but Your Jeep will be wasting away at home... It's not for me.

The question is.. should he have bought a 2012 Jeep with 3.73s as opposed to 4.10s to squeeze out more MPG?
There's been many posts about this ... maybe someone should start a 2012 gearing thread, pros and cons.

I know the mpg debate is always lame because it's a jeep and it will never get great mpg but something close to the sticker is all I was hoping for. This is my third wrangler and 6th jeep so i buy them because i love jeeps not mpg. At 60mph I was getting the same at 70 or 45 for that matter.
I guess my gripe is that if a stock 2012 JKUR auto can get high teens on the highway I feel that I should be able to get with in one or two mpg of that. Oh'well, back to the gas station for some more smiles per mile.

You guys need to let these Jeeps break in before you get shell shocked by the MPG. Especially when you add bigger tires and stuff from the get go. Let the engine and tranny combo run it's course, wear in and you'll be fine. Remember to do your first oil change and all that stuff and your MPG will go up after you put some miles on it. You just gotta sit back and be patient.

The speed is what killed your highway mileage! The load that you are putting the engine under increases greatly with speed due to the (lack of) aerodynamics of the Jeep. The faster you go beyond 55, the worse your mpg is going to get! (not saying 55 is a magic number just that, IIRC 55 is what speed EPA highway mileage is calculated at (or did they change it to 60 like there was talk of years ago?)) The drag of the Jeep's shape is actually killing your mileage at speed much worse than adding a bunch of weight to a vehicle with a lower coefficient of drag.
That being said, your engine also isn't broken in yet so, mileage will increase some there too!
On a side note, I have an '11 (3.5" lift/35's/4.10's) and i get 13mpg average!

Currently have just over 3k miles on my jeep and drove it 725mi to my in-laws. I was hoping for like 17-18mpg on the highway.
I hand calculated my mpg and checked my speed with gps. Going 71mph I was getting about 14.1mpg, tried a tank of 93 oct and it went up to 14.7. Those are all highway miles but even my mpg in town is really close at 13.8 ish. Any one have any thoughts as to why it's that low. I wouldnt think my 285's and leveling kit would kill it that much.

Maybe I missed it but has the OP recalibrated the speedo/odometer for his larger tires? If not, that right there will make you believe you're getting worse milage because the Jeep is registering less miles than is actually traveled.
Also, I've noticed my Jeep reads slightly fast and more miles than actual from the factory. Not much but some.
