I also have a 2011 that it looks like crap but it was the best alternative at the time.

Here are pics of the original style on my 2012. The lower fit sucks as it leave a gap where you can see the wires that go up to the switches. I just pulled it back off to wire new rear bumper lights and added wire loom over all the wires and it helps to blend it in a bit....

Much better from the pic shown... I might buy it when it comes out even though I spent the $ on the original for my 2012.

Would it not be possible to use the original piece somehow to fill in that gap?

In case anyone has been sleeping, the interior of the JK was updated in the 2011 models. So, there is your first clue...
