I am trying my hardest to wait till the detroit auto show to see if jeep mentions any plans for optional engines. If there is no hope for a hemi or diesel for 2008 I will by the 2007.
As for the fly by wire. In the new wranglers there is no mechanical connection between the gas pedal and the throttle connection on the engine. They use elctronic moduals that send a signal to the throttle on the engine. They tj's and all other wranglers before had a throttle cable that was actually connected to the engine and the gas pedal. Hope that answers your question.
As far as being better or worse I couldn't tell you.

I don't see DC doing either one of those engines. I'd love a diesel, I just don't think they'll offer one.

One great feature that my wife like is that the driver seat can be raise for more than an inch but the pedal were a bit far. My wife didn't like that they don't see the fender to place herself on the road. Going dirty fast, barely see past the side window after a snow fall that melt. For every other things I have forgot, I really love it that way.

Wifes comments:
Little things really...
-She had to learn to use her mirrors due to reduced rear vision. We have a long driveway.
-The rainwater does drip on your pants (or skirt in her case) when you open the door on a rainy day
-Her biggest bitch was there's no room to put her purse on the console or on the floor in the center if there's someone riding shotgun. We had a 4dr Tahoe before the 4dr JK and it had space to set a purse.
-She loves the way it drives and likes the fact it's a little more of a utility vehicle than the Tahoe. I'm sure part of her affection is that it's new and the Tahoe was 9 years old. We have a CJ7 that's a real peach in it's own radical way that she won't ride in because "it's too bumpy" But she couldn't be happier with the JK and if it's one thing I've learned in 20 years of being married - put your wife in a decent car and your life will be a little less complicated.
Good luck
