im having trouble finding rims that are 18inch. any good ones out there?

I'm gonna be selling 3 18" Sahara rims soon if you're interested. Are you talking about aftermarket rims?

The tires are expensive, and the choice is limited

IMO, this is the real question. Looks? Handling (with road tires)?
If you don't like the stock 18s, you will find a larger selection of tires at a lower cost if you just drop down 1".

had the 18" sahara rims on my X for awhile, thought about putting 33' MT's on them but WAY too expensive, bought 17's and the smaller rim size isnt even noticeable.
