Recovery Strap or Winch?

Recovery Strap or Winch?
What if...
Your buddy gets stuck in the mud or whatever the conditions be. What are the deciding factors that determine whether to pull him out with a recovery strap or to use yours, his/her winch?
I have been off-roading quite a bit in my days and the most time we just use straps. But that is because we didn't have a winch at the time.
I see a winch being very handy when you are by yourself and if you don't have the room to yank someone with a recovery strap.
Maybe I answered my own questions but would like to get thoughts.
Thanks

If it looks like you'd get stuck too, winch. If your buddy's balls deep, Hilift and winch. If you're close and on fairly firm ground, impatient or overdosing on testosterone, strap. As per usual, each situation will dictate your actions.
