Default Reasons Like This Are Why We Shouldn't Have Tow Straps With Metal Hooks In Our Jeeps

A few weeks ago, after a heavy snow a fellow Hoosier was using a tow strap with a metal hook to help free a motorist's car that slid into a ditch. Tragically the hook came loose and came flying through his back window, struck him in head and killed him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PdUAoLL99w I've seen a lot of people on the trails not taking vehicle recovery safety very seriously. Things like this remind us how fast things like this can go wrong.

Stay safe out there guys!

Sad indeed. RIP. Exactly why I use D-rings and tow straps.

I still can't get over his 5 year old daughter sitting next to him and having to witness it. Tragic.

That's terrible. Typical jeeper, trying to help someone who is stuck. I hope his family recovers and his daughter doesn't have to much psychological issues. What a tragedy. Best wishes to his family.

A line dampener blanket came with my winch and I filed it into the back of the garage. Do they help prevent tragic accidents like this? My prayers go out to the family.

Yep.

And a safety reminder: even when getting pulled by a fellow Jeeper don't be shy about stopping something you see that's unsafe. Was helping with a recovery of a friend this last summer and another Jeep that was hooked up trying to pull him out of a mudhole was using an obviously undersized D ring. He insisted it was strong enough... it wasn't. Thing was a damn missle when it broke. Thank god it caught the windshield frame when it flew back and didn't hit a person first.

I had it happen when I was a noob jeeper with my first TJ years ago; I was trying to pull a neighbor out of the snow with his cheap-ass metal hook towstrap when it broke and went flying into my grill. It broke a headlight and made a nice dent in grill that reminded me for years why you don't use straps with metal hooks.

We were lucky nobody got hurt. Never again!!!!!
