Default Random MPG drop...? Your thoughts...

Hi all,

So I was away on business for about 2 weeks and when I started the Jeep up again this past Monday my MPG had dropped by about 1 full mile. Before I left I was averaging about 16.5 - 17.2 driving around town and light highway use. All week I've been extra easy on gas thinking it would creep back up, but I can't get better than 15.8 MPG.

Is this normal? What might have caused this? It's not the end of the world but with gas prices what they are, every cent counts!

where and what kind of gas did you put in it last? maybe you just need to run a tank or two through and clean her out. Windy lately? that hurts too. So does temperature. I know some people might just say "it's a Jeep thing.." but that doesn't count here.

I'm a man of routine. Always put in Hess regular, same station. No more windy than usual. Temperature has gotten a bit warmer, but nothing dramatic. There was a 1/4 tank in when I got home, drove through that for a day or so at 15.3 MPG, filled up on Tuesday full tank and have been stuck at 15.4 - 15.8.

Did you check your tire pressure, you may have a low tire. There may also be a bit more ethanol on the gas you have in it, that can significantly affect your MPG.

A lot of times if im suddenly getting lower MPG I check the tires and the air filter. Sometimes its dirty dirty and sometimes i just need to clear out a few leaves.

Maybe the quality of gas that the stations are getting is Worse than what they normally get. There is a war over seas. Just sayin.

Is it possible that the station converted from real gas to ethanol-laced gas? In case you didn't know, this costs them money--they must have the tanks cleaned before putting the alcohol in them and a friend of mine who owns three service stations refused to do so for a very long time because it was $1000/station. So, your local Hess may have been putting this conversion off, but finally made the change to hold the price/gallon down.

They could also be switching fuels over from winter to summer weight. I've seen my mpg go up since its warmed up here in AB, and I'm starting to see some of the summer weight fuels again.
