Default Questions from a new member

Hello all,
I have a 2008 jeep compass for the "family jeep" but the wife and I want to get back into some good ol off roading fun. Once I finish this tour in Germany we are going to pick up a Jeep Wrangler ( not sure which model ) but we want a 2 door rather than 4 door personally I prefer 2 doors on a wrangler. Now the question portion... for trails what type of mods am I going to have to do? I've done some trailing in the compass but do not want to waste the time on modifying that if I'm going to get a JK. Being in the military I'm going to moving every 3-5 years so the area of trailing will be unknown until we know where we are going. I don't want to set up for a rock climber cause frankly I do it all the time in my tactical vehicles and the wife is not interested in it. Is there a different mod for a sandy area vs dirt trails or is it the same? I appreciate the responses and I'm sure I'll have more questions to come.

For a decent setup that is capable for most terrain with your exception of rock crawling, I'd go with a good set of 35" tires on some wheels with around 4-4.5" bs, lockers or LSD's, new gears, depending on the size of your current ones and the size tire you actually go with, a lift that's around 2.5-3.5" and will also allow some flex, new driveshafts, and maybe offroad lights.

Bumpers and tire carriers are cool but not necessary for just fun offroading, air intakes, snorkels(vary with location and terrain), or exhaust kits are the same way. And any other little mods you want to consider is up to you. I would though also suggest some good recovery gear like a winch or tow straps for the occasional sticky situation...

Being prior military i know where you are coming from. If you are going to go for a 2 and the wife is not interested in something well modified, I would go very subtle. Depending on which Wrangler model you get, the coils off a 4dr Rubicon installed on a 2dr will give you an average of 1.5" -2" of lift. I would do that or the Teraflex 1.5" leveling kit and throw some 33" tires on. That way your Jeep is still highway friendly and offroad capable, keep in mind that the newer Jeeps are sooooooo much more capable straight from the factory than most people think. I went a whole two years offroading on stock suspension before i bought a legitimate lift.

I would suggest that you read all the info on these links before deciding what you want to do to your Jeep. https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/modi...bie-has-18617/
