Default Problems with the new JK

Hey guys picked up my new JK X the other day. Loving it by the way. However I've being having lots of problems with my gear box. Shifting from 1 to 2 I get all kind of grinding especially when cold. It’s so bad sometimes I have to double clutch to get it to go in smoothly. Also 4th gear loves to pop out randomly. Do you guys think this is because it’s still new, or should I get this checked out

I'd get it checked as soon as possible. Sounds like linkage adjustment or the shifter is hitting the cover plate on the floor. If you want to take a look yourself, You can lift the shifter boot and see if there is access to the plate. You may be able to slide the plate to make more room

Well, I have an auto, so I defer to any other opinions, but it doesn't sound right to me. I'd have it looked at.

Very sorry that you may be having a problem, it sort of sucks the wind out of your sails, huh? Hope it is something simple, like an adjustment.

A lot of people with the 6 speed manual notice a definite roughness going from 1st to 2nd. It's worse when cold. I've noticed in mind however, no grinding or popping out. I'd go get it checked.

Wow, last vehicle I had to double clutch was my brothers' 1966 Land Rover! You definitely should NOT have to double clutch your JK and popping out of gear is unacceptable.

Get it checked out ASAP. If nothing else, you're starting the paper trail to getting whatever resolution is appropriate (to include the worst case scenario: getting a replacement JK). Please let us know what the dealer does for you.

One word; "FINESSE" That and give it some time to break in. The Cold issue sounds typical of the manuals I've owned. The 4 gear sounds like maybe you need to give it a little wiggle to make sure you are getting it all the way in the hole...

I just had mine taken cared of. It was a slushy feeling going into 2nd, also 3rd & 5th would pop out sometimes or not want to stay in once I put it in unless I held it with my hand for a sec. They replaced the boot and the shift lever. no problems since.

I'm definitely going to bring this to the dealership's attention when i go in. I get a free oil change for doing a survey with my salesman. So i'll let him know whats up.

I would not listen to anyone who says anything about finessing the stick, or wiggling it a bit to get it into gear, or breaking the jeep in. In fact I think these comments are completly retarted.

I have the same problem, and the gear popping out almost caused an accident the other day that im very certain would have lead to serious injury or death.

I was driving home after work and I was merging onto a busy road. this merge happens to be on a good little hill. The road is extremly high speed, and in order to merge onto it you need to have a bit of speed up. I put the jeep in 4th gear and had more than enough speed, room, and time to merge into traffic safely like I have done everyday, a million times over the past 2 years. Except this time right when I got into the lane the gear pops out, the jeep immediatly jolts and slows down.

The guy behind me was going way to fast and had to manouver quickly not to rear end me, his car ended up fish tailing and he ran up the meridian, he was able to right the car just before he crossed into on comming traffic. I have no doubt in my mind had he crossed into traffic it would have been a deadly accident.

I pulled over to make sure he was ok, turned out to be a father with two toddlers, coming home from christmas shopping. He was very shaken up and was very frightened.

Now even though he was going to fast and had he rear ended me It would have legally been his fault. There is no doubt in my mind that the jeep would have been to blame.

The jeep is going in on thursday, and I am going to refuse to pick it up until they address it. I know exactly what is going to happen, the service department is going to say "they could not duplicate the issue on a test drive"
if this happens im going straight to the manager of the dealership and asking my lease to be voided.

Now before some people respond by saying that im bashing jeeps. I have nothing but good things to say about the jeep up to this point. I have had some small concerns but nothing to write home about, and if this gets fixed I will be very happy. As much fun as this thing has been to drive for the past 6 months, There is no way im going to risk someones life much less my own by driving a vehicale that is not fit for driving.

I would get it fixed asap

First off; I would not listen to anybody who calls some one retarded, that doesn’t even know how to spell retarded… If you are going to insult the mentally challenged; than at the very least you could spell it correctly! Are your shifting skills anything like your grammar skills? If so, this would explain a lot.

Maybe depress the clutch and hit the shoulder of the road quicker if this happens again! It would suck getting tagged in the rear from a speeding vehicle; glad he was able to avoid you and nobody was injured.

Mart0592, it sounds like others have had similar issues and were able to get it corrected. If there is a mechanical issue with your 6 speed, hopefully they’re able to duplicate the problem during the test drive. What I was trying to suggest is that you give your JK and yourself a chance to get to know one another before allowing a mechanic to dismantle your new JK.

It has been my experience that no two manuals shift the same; my current vehicle is a 5 speed, 3rd and 5th gear would cause anyone fits until they get a feel for it. It will allow you to shift straight into 3rd and 5th and will hold the gear until there is a change in throttle input, at which time it will pop out. It will not fully engage the gears unless you shift directly into the gate, and then apply light pressure to the left in 3rd, and to the right in 5th, and then it will slide right in. It is quirky to say the least; and this is a vehicle that just turned 7k on the odometer.

Regardless, let us know how it turns out for you.
