Default Oil change at 1000 miles?

I was told by a fellow Jeeper to change the engine and differential oils at about 1,000 miles to make sure that all the oils are good and topped off. It will also allow me to put on some better differential covers (ARB or Solids) and change to synthetic all around. I was told that in the first 1,000 miles (break-in period), there may some minor metal shavings in the differentials that should be cleaned out when changing the oil.

Should I bother? Or is this BS? Should I just wait until 3k miles for engine and 15k for differentials?

Thanks.

I have always changed my oil at 1k. What they say is true. If you don't believe it, take a magnet and fish it through your oil after the first change and see for yourself whats stuck to it.
