Noticeable difference between a 3.73 & a 3.21?

I ordered my 2dr 2012 sport with the regular tow package and separately specified 3.73 I thought they would charge $50 extra but it was a no cost add on. Just make sure DME is listed on your order if you want 3.73.

The one I am looking at is this one: http://www.jeep.com/hostc/getWindowS...BJWDG0CL112767

From what you said, it is likely that it is the 3.21. I do not see any on the lot that specify 3.73 option. If so it is not the end of the world. I'll go with the 4.11 down the road when I start the heavy modding.

I would triple check that because there are two tow packages and dealers can be dumb.

First, do you want "Max Tow" or "Trailer Tow"?

This is where things get silly.
Max tow comes with a hitch, a 4 pin harness, and 3.73's.
Trailer tow comes with a hitch, a 4 pin harness, and trailer sway software turned on.

Why are there two different packages? No one knows. At least on the 4 doors, you don't even get different springs.
I "think" Max tow was originally meant for two doors or something (maybe different springs?), because it is a waste on 4 doors.
Max tow is a total rip-off of Rubi's. You end up paying for 3.73's that you don't need, and you don't get the trailer sway software turned on.

Order the tow package and the 3.73's. That way you get the software turned on. It costs the exact same price as Max Tow in the end.

Chrysler needs to pull its head out of its butt.

You have Trailer tow, not Max tow...so you have 3.21's.
I've only seen a couple that have 3.73's on the lot....but you can find them. Look for either the $50 charge for 3.73's, or the $320 charge for Max Tow.

As an FYI....since it is just software, all Wranglers CAN have trailer-sway control A dealer on another site confirmed that they do...but I'm still holding out.

Basically, no one understands why there are two different packages. It seems like any dealer could just "turn on" trailer sway (assuming it isn't already turned on as one dealer had stated) and call it a day.

The new 5 speed auto tranny is geared much shorter in 2012....so 3.21's are no where near as sluggish as they used to be.
With stock tires the 3.21s are great. Go to 35s and not so much. I have 35s on 3.21s and while it's driveable, I am looking forward to a regear to 4.56s (I have 37s in my future, but am compromising with 4.566s since I will have the 35s for a while).

Good stuff. I will be on stock tires for a while before I go full tilt. At that point i'll re-gear to something more substantial.

Good to hear that 3.21's are OK....
Do you have a manual or an auto?

I keep going back and forth between 3.21's and 3.73's. I don't plan on going with bigger wheels...so I may stick with the 3.21's....but I'm not sure.

How is your highway fuel economy? That is the big driver for me.

According to the Chrysler media release on the 2012 Wrangler, ALL Wranglers have the trailer sway software. No exceptions.
