Default Noob Has A Question

First of all, glad to be here.

I don't own a JK...yet. However I'm looking at getting a 2 wheel drive Unlimited (can't really afford 4 wd, wish I could) and want to know how I could make it more off-road capable. This will be a daily driver and certainly don't plan on doing anything extreme off road but there's a few spots I go fishing and hunting where having 4 wd would be most helpful. Would a locker on the rear diff help out much? Also, converting it completely to 4 wd would require what? A front diff and a T-case? And would most certainly void the lifetime warranty right? Any advise would be great. Thanks.

That's the mistake I made - I got a 2007 4 door /2wd Jan 2007 because I thought I would not/would not want - to do any off-roading. Had it for a year and during that time really really wanted a 4wd - traded it for a new 2007 2dr/2wd this past year! If you can't swing it now - I understand - been there but if at all possible - get the 4wd - just sharing what happened to me

i would think that resale of the 2wd vs the 4wd would more than offset the cost up front

Thumbs down Nnnnnooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

Don't do it... You will hate yourself for it.... If you can hold out for a little bit and get the 4x4. It isn't really a Jeep until you got a T-case....

Default it depends....

Hey if your not going to do anything hardcore then 2wd is fine. I have a 4wd and only put it in when I have to... I was amazed at how easy you can get over most things out there in 2wd.

That being said!!! Once you do get offroad you will get it in your blood and man its hard to stop once you have tasted the freedom it brings to be able to crawl over shit that would make your granny piss her pants... Or skirt...

So I guess you know yourself the best.. Are you really only going to use it on the road and occasional trail for fishing?

You MAY regret having to wait a couple extra months to buy your JK, while you save up the extra $$$ for 4WD... but you WILL regret not having 4WD.

As for what it would take to upgrade a 2WD to a 4WD, don't forget all the fancy-schmancy (not to mention expensive) electronics-related modifications that would be required, to make your Jeep recognize that it has 4WD...

Yeah I figured as much. Alright 4wd it is. I agree in the fact that I will def. regret not getting 4wd especially on a Wrangler. It kind of negates the whole purpose. I have a 4wd XJ and would have never bought it if it wasnt 4wd. Thanks for the replies.

Ok, I'll be honest I don't know much about drive trains. Atlas T case, what will that do for me? will just the atlas add-on turn it into 4wd? Or do I also need a new front axle with a diff. And if so does it have to be the same ratio as the rear diff? I'd imagine so.
