NEW 2012 Jeep Sport very Bad on Gas but its also nearly zero miles....Pg.5 updates
Hi all,
I just purchased a brand new 2012 Jeep because it was suppose to be more fuel efficient and more powerfull to boot.
From Zero to 250 miles on the odometer it drained a whole tank. I was very soft on the throttle with some mostly street driving. The computer said 16~17mpg and the ECO was on most of the time.
From 250miles to 545miles, I went through another full tank. I topped it off and 17gallons fit. Again I baby the throtle and make sure the ECO log pops up so I save on fuel.
Now, I put another 17 gallons from 545 miles to now its at 750miles and 1/8 tank left warning is already on. This time the computer says 18mpg most of the time but my MPG math wise seem identical.
I expected 17MPG, but figured I might get lucky and since I drive as slow as possible and take off very slow too. I expected 20mpg average. Maybe 350 Miles per 17gallons of fuel.
Is this bad mileage because my Jeep is new?
Am I crazy to expect 20MPG?
My wheels are 17in and normal street tires. I have an automatic with Hardtop.
Thank you,
bigC

Thats about what I get too. Is your Jeep relatively low miles as well?
I hear for example those Diesel egines need a couple thousand miles before the MPG improve. Maybe its the same with these New Jeeps..or I hope at least

You are crazy to expect 20mpg sorry to say. You have to figure you are literally driving a brick on wheels. They weigh a ton and they have next to no aerodynamic design. I knew when I bought my jeep that my mpg was going to be crappy... I expected a little better like you did but I am not surprised at how poor it is when its all said and done. Dont forget when you look at the window sticker on a vehicle they are showing best possible outcome at that high number on the highway... probably down hill with the wind to your back.

I average about 17.6 in my 2012, but I'm running 35" tires on the factory 4.10 gears. I mostly drive highway so not much stop and start. My light usually comes on at around 305 miles and it usually holds right at 17gallons.

Hi all,
Thanks for the info. I guess I dont feel bad now.
Maybe they tested the Sport Softop with 6 speed and those tiny wheels with nothing electric and the 3.23 rear-end going 55mph on freeway
What about continue driving relatively gentle on the throttle and adding a Cold-Air with Exausts?
That might help?
My old 97 TJ 4cyl had 4:88 and 33's on 4in lift and it got me 13~15 MPG. So, at least its not worse on gas than my retired Jeep. So, its still a vast improvement for me.
