An 8000lb winch with a snatch block and good anchor is plenty enough! I will second the good recovery gear if you choose to go that way!!

On my fullsize bronco on 38" swampers a 9000lb was enough. On my 2dr I have a 9000lb and have never gone beyond the second wrap of cable (about 5500lb of pull) and have pulled myself out plenty with a snatch block and a good anchor point. Even with a 9000lb you will not get that full amount of pull until you are on the botom wrap of cable, so you would have to pull out 80-100' of cable before you get that.

I am not saying your dad is wrong, but there is math involved and once you understand it, it makes more sense. If you want a true 9000lbs of pull off of the first roll of cable (20ish feet) then you would need something like a 15,000lb winch.

Most manufacturers list what the pull rating is per wrap of cable with the model of winch you choose. Read it and then look how many people make successful pulls off the first or second wrap. You will be surprised what 4000-6000 lbs of pull can do!!

Per Warn (specs for xd9000) (rolling load....no resistance)

12V DC PERFORMANCE SPECS
Line Pull------------------Line Speed--------------------------Current Pull by layer
Lbs.(Kgs.)----------------FT./min(M/min.)---------------------Motor layer/Lbs(Kgs.)
0---------------------------38(11.6)-----------------------------70 amps 1/9000(4082)
2000(910)---------------14.4(4.39)---------------------------180 amps 2/8190(3715)
4000(1810)--------------11(3.35)----------------------------- 255 amps 3/7500(3402)
6000(2720)--------------8.67(2.64)---------------------------330 amps 4/7010(3180)
8000(3630)--------------6.88(2.10)---------------------------415 amps
9000(4080)--------------6.38(1.94)---------------------------460 amps

On the outermost layer of cable (first 20 feet or so) you are only getting 7000lbs of pull, on the 8000lb model winch you get 6900lbs on the first layer......hence an 8k winch is more than enough when used properly.

You've already got the CAI, if you want a little more performance what about a Superchips Tuner and Exhaust? The 3 go quite nicely together...
