Need a bike rack
Hey guys I have a mountain bike and a Road bike I need to take with me to college and I need to get a bike rack for the Jeep. Any suggestions? I have 33's and plan on going to a max of 37's in the future and I don't have a trailer hitch.
Thanks
Matt

hey there...i have a rack that straps onto the spare on the tailgate...
it carries two mountain bikes with ease...
very secure...never had an issue with it...
clever thing is that you can open the gate...
with the rack and bikes in place...very handy...
i'll take a pic and post it...

After too many years, Yakima finally redesigned their spare tire mount and it's really nice hxxp://yakima.com/shop/bike/spare-tire/sparetime
You may need to get the tube top to hold your mountain bike, I did for my old spare mount as the Y frame and rear suspension made it impossible to mount without it. The new Yakima rack is not cheap, but is secure and hold the bikes both horizontally and has vertical support to prevent them from swaying in the rack and bonking one another.

Do you have a JK or a JKU? Is your road bike carbon?
If you have a carbon road bike hanging it from the frame, like a spare tire type rack is bad for the frame. You pretty much need a hitch for a tray type carrier in that case. If you have a 4 door Jeep, the bikes will fit in the back with the rear seats folded down.
If your road bike isn't carbon, embrace being a poor cheap college student and get a rack that hangs on the spare tire.

Is hanging a road bike that is carbon, by its wheels a bad thing? My brothers is always hung upside down by its wheels?

I had the yakima spare tire track and liked it. I think it would work with up to a 33"tire. I do recommend loctite on the threads as they came loose easily.
Had to ditch it when I bought a beefier tire carrier.

So the yakima wouldn't be okay with a say km2 35? the 35x12.5 one?
As far as not hanging a bike by the top tube: would you ride a bike that can't support it's own weight by the top tube?
