X2, You didn't get road hazard on new tires? It's usually cheaper to get that than pay for a new tire. I would suggest also to get a new tire, that way you know you'll have a good spare.

I would have another shop look at it. I had a nail near my sidewall on my factory stock Dueler's. Took it in and they pulled the tire, put a patch over the nail hole on the inside (proper repair vs. plus being mostly used as a temporary repair). So far, no issues.

The patches they use nowadays bond almost like they are part of the original rubber and unless you actually had cord damage (not likely) I am thinking you will never see another problem.

But then............I could be wrong too.....

If getting a new tire isnt an option right now, & like what the OP said; how about using that tire as a spare, but getting it plugged as well as placing an inner tube in the tire if its possible.....

A tire plug kit is only a few bucks at your local auto parts store. Unless the nail's right on the edge or damn near it, plug the tire it'll be fine. I've done it many times when shops won't and I've never had a problem. Whether it can handle airing down for wheeling is another question. So I'd do like what the others said and plug it and make it your spare. And I'd take advantage of this opportunity to learn how to do the plug yourself because it's an incredibly useful skill to have. I find myself plugging someone's tires a few times a year.

I've never had a problem either. Works like a charm every time for me.

I'd go to a better tire shop,, you can get much closer to the sidewall with an inside patch.. I dont like plugs unless in a pinch or already have crappy tires..
