I hope she wasn't flustered about anything other than being pulled over lol....

JK it happens....I have been pulled once just so the trooper can check out the JK....when I was building mustangs (87-93 fox bodies) I would get pulled constantly doing 55mph in the left lane with cruise control on...just so the cops could check it out. One time on my way back from the hamptons I actually got pulled from a trooper in a camaro (this was back in like 1998) and he wanted to go over to the Ocean Parkway and do a little drag racing.

Cops are just regular people in a uniform...some are cool and enthusiasts...some are grumpy old assholes.

I can understand how your wife was nervous...woman just don't get it....I know my wife would have been crying lol

, and if it's a jeep/sports car/older obviously restored vehicle, i'll compliment the driver or try to strike up a conversation about the vehicle.

maybe some of you don't think it's professional, and that's your opinion.. i won't argue that it is professional, but i've never had a complaint. i find the driver usually leaves happy, having not gotten a ticket and been complimented on his vehicle... and as i stated in an earlier post, i just like having a normal interaction with the public every so often. it's refreshing.
The highlighted part in the quote makes it OK because it is a good reason to pull one over. Nothing wrong with complimenting the vehicle after the ligit stop.

I think Its not considered an arrest its considered a detention, an arrest is when you take a person into custody with handcuffs or some other physical restraining device. A detention is when you are not free to leave but you are not arrested.

Once they say "you are under arrest" you are considered arrested.... we can't apprehend civilians, but we can detain them

Here is my . It is an abuse of power. When you turn on your red & blue lights to pull someone over, at that time, they do not know that they are free to leave and not stop if they don't want to. A traffic stop is conducted under law with reasonable suspicion and/or probable cause, without that it is unlawful. A traffic stop is considered an arrest as you should reasonably know that you are not allowed to leave. If you have ever signed a citation you should know this. A citation is essentially your bond/promise to appear in court. If you had actually been arrested then you would have to appear before a judge to post a bond, on traffic stops the citation circumvents this. And what the hell would you do if they ran? You still have no probable cause to chase and if you did any evidence you collected after that would be inadmissible and would be thrown out, because you didn't have probable cause to stop them in the first place.
I have rolled down my window and asked someone if they had time to talk to me before and they agreed, but if I had pulled them over it would have been an unlawful detention/arrest in the absence of reasonable suspicion or probable cause. I would be willing to bet that not only would this be a police policy violation, but it most likely is a state violation too.

It's not an arrest just because their lights were involved, plain and simple. But I do agree with Robar - it's an abuse of power. What if she had freaked out and panicked, and curbed the Jeep at speed, or hit something/someone as a nervous, distracted knee-jerk reaction? Now, all of a sudden, she'd be guilty of a crime that she wouldn't have otherwise committed.

Cool that she didn't get a ticket or anything, but not a proper use of authority IMO.

this happened to me back when I had my Chevy 1500 (yellow of course!)

I got it before the new body style was actually released and therefore was the only one on the roads with it. I immediately put a Rancho 4 inch and pipes and customed the interior a bit.

Within the first week I was stopped twice for this same purpose. even popped the hood for them!

Maybe I am just different than a lot of people out there but I ENJOY things like that. Even when I get pulled over for speeding (other family car is a G35 Coupe ) Most of the time the officers are really cool and after a short conversation I am let go with a warning to slow down. Hell I even pull to the right and stop when I see lights coming the other direction. It's sad how few people still do this.
