I too use Simple Green. Spray it around on the hood, motor, sides. Have a drink or bite to eat, then grab the hose and spray it all down.

It doesn't get it spotless, but it does make it look good. Do it enough and it will start staying cleaner 'cause the dirt won't have dirt to stick to.

Just did this yesterday.

I covered up the battery, fuse box, and alternator with Walmart bags.

Did a 50/50 mix of some biodegradeable all purpose cleaner.

Sprayed everything minus directly onto the belt or into wires.

Set the hose spray to flat...mist. And sprayed it out.

Uncovered the bags and wiped it down.

Not car show clean, but enough to where I can work in it or under without crap falling on me

Bump...I'd like to know too. I was thinking about just taking it to a shop and getting it detailed.

You would be wasting your money.

You could easily do it yourself.

They will do the same thing, but probably with less care.

The engine bay is pretty sealed...including wires and harnesses. Just don't go using a firehose directly into anything.

I just want to add ... don't wash a hot engine it's a good way to crack or warp a manifold. It's one thing to splash it and another entirely to hit it with a volume of directed cold water.

Just did mine this last weekend. Several wheeling trips of grime. Washed it in the morning while engine cold after sitting all night.

1) low pressure rinse down
2) sprayed everything with simple green and let it sit a while
3) low pressure rinse again. I let the hose and low pressure nozzle laying above the engine pointed at the raidator and fan (but not at alternator) for about 5 minutes
4) be suprised at how much mud and dirt was hiding under there now messing up the driveway
