Default Mirror Legality

Ok me and my bro are currently discussing if driving without mirrors is legal or not. I went and bought those little convex mirrors and put them on my ac vents for driving without doors. Is that legal or do I need to buy some sorta exterior mirror to drive. My vehicle is licensed in TX

You only need a mirror on the drivers side to be legal, im pretty sure. Not sure if the vent mirrors make it legal or not though. Ive been pulled over without doors and no mirrors and the cop didnt even notice so i wouldnt worry about it

When I lived out in California, I remember the law was you needed any combination of 2 mirrors between the rear view mirror and the two side mirrors... and I have no idea if your a/c vent mirror would count.

I did the same thing with sticky mirrors on my vents, but to be legal you need to put on at least one external mirror.
I've also never had any trouble with the police just using my vent mirrors though.

In Texas you only need one mirror that can clearly view at least 200 ft to the rear. It can be either an inside or an outside mirror.

TRANSPORTATION CODE

CHAPTER 547. VEHICLE EQUIPMENT

SUBCHAPTER A. GENERAL PROVISIONS
§ 547.602. MIRRORS[0] REQUIRED. A motor vehicle, including
a motor vehicle used to tow another vehicle, shall be equipped with
a mirror[0] located to reflect to the operator a view of the highway
for a distance of at least 200 feet from the rear of the vehicle.

Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995

Cool, I'd always thought I needed an external one. I will stick with my sticky mirrors. Thanks for the info!

Well, if you are reading the Transportation Code above, I would assume it is for Texas. It may be different in Washington state.

This code is from the Texas traffic code. It is for Texas only as most states have their own and often different laws.
