Manufacturer Buyback?

Just my 2 cents but the 2000-3000 price difference of a new jeep over the used one will probably come back to you upon resale, and that is before even considering the hit you will take on resale due to the title issue.

The wife and I are finally taking the plunge and went out to look at some used 2 doors the other day. We found a nice looking 2011 Sport S with 12,000 miles, hard top, tints, manual, Uconnect, and upgraded sound and the S package. Pretty much everything we were looking for plus some things we're not (Uconnect & premium stereo).
We took it for a good long test drive and really liked it. It's priced at $22,500 and they are offering $2500 in trade (probably $500 from where it should be).
When we sat down to talk numbers our salesman "realized" that the Jeep was a manufacturer's buyback and he had to disclose to us that it had a leak problem but that "it's all taken care of now."
I wasn't surprised to hear about a Jeep that leaks but I was to hear that it was bad enough to warrant a buyback. This all pushed us further away from the Jeep but I was wondering if anyone on here has had a positive experience purchasing a lemon/buyback. The dealer I was at blamed the original dealership and said they were too lazy to fix it but now it's all taken care of and that there would be a warranty against any future leak problems. If we decide to go this route I'll take it to a car wash bay and run water on it for a bit to test it. Another concern, however, will be the resale of it for us. We likely won't run this thing to the ground so we'll be looking to move it in a few years. How much of a hit and hassle will we be in for at that time?
Any thoughts?

We were started looking we were on fence as well. Used or new. They hold their value incredibly well. Our budget went up a little and settled for a new Sport with 16's and 225/75/16 tires. Here is something you could think about. Buy a stock and upgrade by getting slightly used items from other forum members like I did. Saved a ton purchased larger tires and wheels from a 4 door as well as springs and shocks.

Thanks again for the replies. I started looking around at new 2012s and found one that stickers at 26,645 that has what we are looking for. (hard top, 23S, and power convenience). The biggest trick seems to be the limited number of hard tops out there right now.
The Smart Target Price from cars.com comes out at $25,800 with an invoice of $25,600. Are people getting below invoice without Tread Lightly or other promotions?
Thanks again. We talked and are putting the buyback behind us. On to the next.

So make sure you think about it and read all the fine print. Happy hunting.

branded titles
I see that you've gotten good answers already and made a decision so I'll share what little I know about branded titles for others to take or leave.
I'm not sure if buy backs are treated differently than savage/flood etc but those are considered to be in poor retail condition regardless of age/mileage or the current state of repair. I actually looked into buying a branded title vehicle that I trusted last year. A 2001 XJ 30K miles priced appropriately for the salvage title and found out that our credit union will not touch any branded title vehicle no matter the down payment or state of repair. Even with "only" a buy back on it's history, I would expect to take a big hit when trading it back in.

Start by walking quickly and then run away from the dealer as fast as you can. They are full of BS.
I had a 2012 that got lemoned, every time i brought it in for the leak the dealer and Chrysler said it was fixed. 4 different dealers and none of them could fix the leaks. Every time it just got worse.

One last bit of information on the buyback, my bank will not finance a manufacturer buyback. So if anyone does think about going that route they should check with their lender first.

Thanks again everyone. I really appreciate the help I received.
