Manual Transmission Question

100% normal...you get used to the wiggle it's a Jeep thing.
pavement driving it vibrates a little until you hit bumps...then the stick shift a will jump around a do a little dance.
off-road/gravel roads it will vibrate & jump around a little more due to the uneven surface.

A little bit of side to side movement while in gear is normal, but I think an inch or so as the original poster mentioned is excessive.
The shifter on my '09 Rubi 6 speed does vibrate a little while in gear, but there is almost no side to side movement while in gear.
Now if you want to talk about excessive vibration and long throw shifters, you should jump into a 5 speed YJ and give that a go. Reaching for fifth in the YJ was like reaching out to another country and the vibrations would almost work my nails free if I rested my hand on the shifter for too long.........

Thank You
I'm glad to hear that this is normal...I guess it's just something that I need to get used to.
Now the only thing that's really keeping me from purchasing this JK is the price...dealer wants a premium for the 6-speed...
I'd like to thank everyone again for their input...it has been very helpful and put my concerns to rest. Thank you!

Two more things to consider besides the shifter:
1. Consider the auto if you will be playing in deep water. Search the threads for the reason.
2. Stock gear ratio is 3.73 with auto, 3.21 with stick. See if you can get a tow package with 4.10's unless you are getting the Rubicon. I think you said you were so you are good to go.

Like Ronjenx said, the JK's shifter is mounted directly to the transmission. Most cars mount the shifter to a bracket then use linkages or cables to connect the transmission. Due to this any movement the transmission gets from the engine, driveline, or bumps in the suspension are transmitted to the shifter. Its normal, and on road, up to about 1.5" movement is not uncommon. Off road, in rough terrain, it can and will move more to the point where you can't really keep your hand on it.
You really shouldn't keep your hand on the shifter anyways because it can cause extra wear on the shift forks inside the transmission.

I think the only way to get the 2010 with a 4.10 is to buy a Rubi. Tow group now comes with 3.73s. If buying used, there were some older models with the 4.10 gears because of the tow pkg (such as my X).
