Default Manual Transmission Poll - Does It Suck?

Am I the only one to find the manual transmission on the JK sucks? It used to crunch really badly before I switched to synthetic, now it's liveable, but not great. Sometimes it crunches & pops coming out of 1st or 2nd, and the transitions in the lower gears is anything but smooth. I'm actually thinking of a transmission swap...

I don't find the 6-spd bad at all, but will go for the auto when I trade my Jeep green lemon in.

it all depends on why you are asking.

Fun to drive= yes
clutch like a sports car = no
more control on the road and off road = yes
Harder to learn to drive off road = yes

If I were you, go with what you are comfortable with, its your jeep. For whatever reason you are buying it, make sure you get what YOU want! I'll go ahead and make a prediction, this is goning to be a close 50 / 50 % for and against. The auto / manual debate always is.

FYI - I'm thinking of swapping the transmission for _another_ 6spd transmission, not an auto. I like manual, but not _this_ manual transmission. :-)

the only problem i have with the manual tranny is that half the time i cannot for the life of me put it in reverse. i'm not sure if it's me or the jeep, but this is not my first manual transmission.

I absolutely detest my manual, but I've had "issues" with it already.

How much would it cost to swap it out to an automatic?

I agree that reverse is hard to find sometimes and I had a little bit of the crunchity crunch when I first got it but once it broke in it has been fine.

I liked my TJ NV3550 5 speed transmission.

I thought I was going to get a manual tramission on my JK until I test drove it.

It felt mushy to me, so I went with the auto.

I've had my Jeep for only two weeks so things may change. I find it about on par with other truck manuals. What's interesting is that the engine likes to rev for power, but the tranny is MUCH smoother to shift at about 2600 rpm instead of higher. I also start letting off the gas a little before shifting and it helped. My first few days were pitiful and embarrassing (stall, crunch, stall...). I'll keep it since I've seen much worse.
