Amen! It's too bad none of the reliable auto makers make a serious off road vehicle; The FJ and the XTerrra are both just a little too odd; though maybe I could live with an XTerra.

Since this is a big decision , and long-term, perhaps renting the Tacoma for a full day or two would give a better sense of how it will serve your needs. " Enterprise" rents just about everything, worth a try. No matter how " practical" the truck, nothing can beat the versatility and fun factor of the JK. They are apples and oranges. 2012 and up JKs are greatly improved , Jeeps will put a smile on your face , can be modded mild or wild .If its just transport , the Toyota. If its a viseral , heart beat goes up a notch, the Jeep. My several cents.

Not sure if this comparo will help, but it might. I had a full sized truck, a ram 1500 with a 2" lift and 35's. I loved the size, the practicality of the bed, and with four doors tons of passenger room. Where it lacked was the trails. The more i got into off roading the more i knew i needed a solid front axle. The IFS is not confidence inspiring (my experience) I know they can be built too
Anyway...
Truck Pros over Jeep
-the bed
-towing
Jeep pros over truck
-can remove the roof, doors
-more fun on the trails (IMO)

me, 9 month old, 5 year old and a wife
I have a 2012 JK 4 door. Works well for our family. Though, when my Honda CRV dies I plan to get a minivan to fill the second space in the garage next to my Jeep.
And I dont get to go out and play much, but I have managed to go camping 4 times in the 16 months of owning my JK. So Im getting the use I wanted out of it.

The taco is a great truck! I owned an 02 TRD and my dad has an 06 TRD that I just lifted.... Much safer vehicle that the jku... look at my roll cage after rolling... It's on the rear head rest... No kids are ever going in here until I sure up the roll cage a lil better

I just picked up my new JK today. I traded a 2011 Tacoma access cab with 16000 miles for it. I've only got 20 mi on the Jeep, but I think I'm really going to like it.....I will miss the Tacoma though, it was a nice truck.....TD

Just wondering what makes a Tacoma more family friendly than a JK?
The JK comes in a 4 door "Unlimited" model, the Tacoma comes in an extended cab model. The JKU has more space for family.
Look, I had some family decisions to make when I decided to go with a JK Unlimited, but my list of Toyota vehicles included a Venza, 4-Runner, Rav-4 and Highlander since they fall into the SUV category like the JK does. I'm not sure how a pickup truck like the Tacoma is suppose to be compared to a JKU. So, I think the decision is easy...IF you need to haul more sh*t, then get a truck (tacoma). If you need to haul more kids and their stuff, then get a JKU.
