Default JK and towing a camper trailer.

Does anyone with a regular jeep tow a folding camper and if so which one? I was told by Fleetwood that the regular JK can NOT tow anything they sell because their lightest has a max weight of 2300 lbs. But the dry (empty) weight for that is 1300 pounds. I don't see why I would need to put more than 700 pounds of stuff in the trailer.

I towed my parents 17' 1977 Travelair trailer... around 3000 +- 500lbs. It's amazing how much stuff adds to the weight of the trailer... water (tank or otherwise), fuel, tools, jacks, etc etc etc it adds up.

My JK towed it OK... I had to keep the RPM above 2500 to keep it happy, so I stayed out of 6th unless going downhill. After I arrived at the campground (about 250km trip), my "change oil" light came on at 4500km :S

Keep in mind that stabilizer bars / weight distribution bars will help a LOT for towing a trailer, especially with a 2dr.

I tow a Palomino Banshee B1 with my unlimited. I think Fleetwood has a similar line. The trailer weighs about 2300 lbs dry, probably around 3000 fully loaded. The tongue weight is over the limit, so I got a weight distribution hitch, which balances things out nicely. It pulls very well, though the Jeep struggles a bit on steep inclines. I've taken it to places other trailers wouldn't dare go.

I tow an 04 Rockwood PUP with my JK and have no problems. It is just under 1600 lbs dry.

Don't get me wrong though, I CAN tell it is back there.

I don't know the setup you have - what is your tow capacity? I have a small coleman pop-up I tow. I think other threads show people towing some sizable campers and boats. But tongue weight, braking ability, sway are always issues with towing. And then where you are towing - up / down steep hills or on the flats. I have a 4DR / 4.10 gears - so it's 3500 lb towing. You might search around the forum (boats, campers, etc) to see what others are doing.

I happen to notice this older thread that has a good discussion on towing... I gather you probably have a 2DR....

I have an Chaser of road trailer made by Adventure Trailer, I have not pulled it with my JK but I had a 2005 LJ. I know it's not a pop up tent trailer but it has a large tent on top, Engel fridge inside, solar power and toilet and shower. It weights @ 1900-2000 pretty well loaded, I was able to pull it using low gears when climbing long, steep hills. If you are looking for a trailer that will follow you anywhere you take your Jeep check out the website and see the trailers.
I have had mine for about 3 years and it has gone many places with me.
I am not affiliated with the company either.

Ok Guy's,

First, let me say the wife and I are NOT into camping (sleeping on the ground in a tent). But we have talked in the last couple of weeks about a small pop-up type trailer.

Was looking into a Fleetwood Cobalt, but I don't care for them 10" wheels at all. But do like the size of the trailer.

So the next step was a Fleetwood Evolution E-1 (in silver to match our JK), anyway does anyone here on the forum have this trailer and tow it behind their JK Unlimited ?
