JK Rubi vs D90
#12
I've had a YJ for 18 years. For the last 8 I've obsessed
over the D90. I wanted one but ended up with a
95 Discovery for family reasons. It was very unreliable
electronically. Luckily it went out the door with the ex.
God I missed that Discovery.
It was a great solid vehicle. Awesome visibility all
around. Expensive to service though.
I regretted not getting the D90 ever since.
They held their value and then some. I often searched
Ebay hoping to get one.
But with the JK you get a similar vehicle, American made,
10 yrs. newer, with 4 doors and a warranty. Plus
more flexible top options and aftermarket parts.
Love it.
I'm glad I got the JK.

They did make a Defender 110 ya know. My dentist used to have one.
LRs are certainly more expensive to service and upkeep. They are very noisy on the freeway. Forget using a cell phone. Very slow on acceleration. Have a recommended max speed of about 60 to 65 mph. But ... they have a rubberized interior and waterproof speakers. My dad's has kick-ass sideways facing jump seats. They have an exterior safari cage around the windshield. A D90 simply conjures up images the UN, the British military, an African safari and they scream "Rugged." Ahh, I have some fond memories of that D90, aptly nicknamed "Red Rover."
And for some reason, my dad's D90 with the original equipment BFG MTs(P275s) rides much smoother than my '07 JK x with the crappy GY Wrangler P245s.
So why didn't I buy a used D-90? Expensive as hell to repair and NO AIRBAGS!!

I know all about the 110's. I went on a photo safari
in South Africa in one for several days. It was great.
But we're talking about a totally different price point
there, if you could find one.
If they had D90's available now for similar $. That
would be a tough choice. I believe they are 1-2
years away from reintroducing them to the U.S.

I am sorry but there's no way you can compare a 4-door JK to a 2-door D90. On a straight up comparison of 2 doors, the D90 has so much more head room and interior cargo volume that it isn't even funny. I really gotta take some side-by-side pics. Prolly be a couple weeks before I am home at my parents house to do this, though.

Well, I finally took some side-by-sides pics. I don't make it back to my parents that often. I will hunt up the pic posting thread tonight and see if I can't them posted.

I had a 99 Discovery and I really liked it, but it just wasn't a Jeep (Meaning Flat fender, CJ, or Wrangler), but it was one tough rig. It was real expensive to service and if you broke anything $$$$$$. The D90 is a great off road rig, but it still isn't a jeep. The LR's were made for expedition type wheelin and not the rock crawling that we tend to do. I'm not saying that you can't make a D90 into a rock crawler, but it takes alot less on a jeep. just my .02

Which one is the D90 vs the D110? I rode around in a 4 dr Defender with the jump seats in the back in the summer of 06 and would love to have one eventually. I never looked at the engine, but from the output behind the wheel felt like a 4cyl.

2-door is the D90 and 4-door is the 110. The numbers roughly translate to the wheel base measurements. And yes, acceleration is terrible. They were designed for military and farm use (i.e. not highway speeds). I'll work on the pics tonight, although they make my JK look pretty wimpy.
