Same reason the others advise blocks of wood. Bigger tires (sorry I said lifted before). The jack will peg out and be unstable and unsafe. I agree a hi-lift at night with no light is risky. And definitely just use it on axle and no frame.

Do the JK axles have a way for the jack to secure to them or anything? Just wondering. Some of the older trucks/4x4's meant for you to lift the vehicle by the axles but it was a tiny 2"x2" or less jack top going on a round axle tube with no specific lifting point or some sort of post and hole or something.
Can always get a small bottle jack or another scissor jack if you don't like the factory stocker. Some of the old factory stuff was beefier than the crappy ones we get now.

Sorry to hear about the misfortune! HiLift jacks are wonderful BUT using one at night, side of road, no light is a recipe for disaster. Check out AEV they make a base you slip under your factory jack. It is safe to use and best part it fits down inside the rear floor storage area. Down side it costs around 50 bucks.

If you try to lift from the frame, the lift will make the stock jack too short. If you lift from under the axle, the stock may be too short with taller tires.
This guy was simply unprepared, that is all.

If the first time you jack up your Jeep is when you blow a tire...
Owner's manual details procedure for jacking up the Jeep...
I agree, how could Jeep do this. They should be ashamed!

Yeah I used the jack on the frame not thinking about it. In retrospect I should have started with it under the axle but once I had jacked up and had taken the flat tire off I was pretty much screwed when I couldn't get the spare on. It's not like I can take the jack out while it's missing a tire lol. I also picked up a flashlight today to keep in the jeep so I won't have that problem again.

The factory jack is actually pretty good for changing tires. I keep a wood block in the Jeep to set the jack on. The block would need to be thicker if I had big tires.
When I get a new ride, I like to try the factory jack in my driveway before I need it on the road.
