Mine is always on me unless I am driving then it is next to my seat. Sometimes I keep the one on me and my spare in the jeep but only when trail riding.
Best word of advise is to take your doors off and practice retrieving it ad shooting it. I do that from time to time but live in the desert.
Oh and the mini gun is a blast to shoot. I love Nevada laws.

Yep, all you do is un-bolt the center console at the back at least in my '09(I can't imagine the '12 to be all that much different) and pull the black insert box out enough to drill your holes. The hardest part was getting everything lined up right. I did drill two holes that ended up being in the wrong spot though but that's not a big deal to me. I also put a piece of aluminum plate on the back side that you can't see to give it something solid to hold onto. I didn't like the idea of my glock bouncing around on two screws mounted to flimsy plastic.

I put mine in the rear cubby and also have the Tuffy rear security enclosure. WA law and on military posts it has to be in a "separate" compartment out of the driver's reach. (It says trunk, but for a SUV/open back has to be far away from the driver) Plus if you don't advertise your firearms, like having a 18" tall "Glock" logo on your Jeep (I've seen it...) and keep it out of sight it makes a difference.
