How to move my foreign spec '08 Wrangler to the US
Hi all,
I'm brand new here and could use some specialized help I hope I can find in this forum. Can anyone offer advice about moving a foreign spec jeep to the US? The details are 2008 soft top 2-door Wrangler Sport, 6 speed with the half doors. I believe it was made in Germany and it is a Gulf-spec (as in Middle East - I bought it in Dubai) vehicle. It's got a bigger bumper than we have in the US and some modifications that help it cope with the 120 degree desert heat (larger radiator and powerful ac).
Of course it's my jeep so I'm attached to it - done lots of "dune bashing" in the desert near Dubai - where it does AWESOME, and I want to bring her back with me to the states. I'm just not sure it's economical and I'm having trouble finding info online.
Your collective response may well be to sell it and buy another when I come to the states (probably moving to Houston), but if anyone knows the general procedure and costs of any necessary conversions (for instance I'm sure the bumper needs to be changed, but not sure about emissions, etc) I'd be grateful to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

From what I understand of the rules, the vehicle only has to pass US specs. I am no expert, but I think it has to pass US safety specs, US emissions, and lights. Bumper should pass, but emissions and lights may have to be up-graded. Check with US Customs Dept. for specifics.
P.S. Welcome back!

Euro specs are pretty high on emission, so if it was built there it should pass US ones.
If it's stock i can almost guarantee you that it will pass.
Shipping you are looking at about $2000 for container. As far as taxes that's a whole other deal.
With all of the hassle, and time, and money, you are better off to buy one here.
Stocked X 2008 can be easily found under $20,000.
I suggest you say bye bye to your jeep, and move on. There are plenty in here.
It will end up costing you a lot to bring it over here. especially with the euro going down.
I have friends who have shipped cars to europe, but don't know of the other way around

Not to argue about emission specs, but there are some pretty nice vehicles available over seas that are not sold here because they won't pass US emissions.
You have to find out what was made differently on a JK that was meant for export. If it doesn't have the safety features required for import to the US, it will cost many thousands of dollars to have it federalized.
