I'm a +1 on "no top, no doors, mesh bikini"
Of course, I tend to ask my female passengers to help out with the bikini part. I'm more of a "Board Short" sorta guy.

I'm considering insulation as well. Especially on those days when it's 125* in the afternoon. (that's not uncommon here in the Mojave)
But until then, something I do to help out the a/c is;
Keep the RPM's up by choosing a gear that keeps them +/- 2500.
Push "recirculate" on the a/c selector. Keeps the hot air outside.
Blow from the dash only.
These things really make the difference out here.

Swap the Top
In Bama we are having 95+ degree days this summer and I work out of my Jeep. I have gone the first 2 years with the hard top on and had your same complaint. I swapped to the soft top this spring and WOW!!! there is a big difference (cooler) with the soft top. MY only complaint now is not being able to talk on the cell when it's raining and I do pull over to talk on the cell.

I just finished my hard top insulated headliner project this weekend. Tomorrow is supposed to be another 100+ day, so I will let yall know how it turns out. I already know that it is much quieter
