Be honest...Is the JK truly a "hard core" 4X4?

And if i had the money, I'd take a G wagon any day and drive the crap out of it!!

This video was entertaining... but if the G wagons have lockers, why wasn't his front axle locked?

So what is "hard core" to me? I've said it before, but the difference to me boils down to tool vs toy. I'm still trying to decide which side my JK belongs on.
I believe the answer is BOTH

There aren't many babes out in the bush where I go unless they come with me, but my wife frowns on me getting down with the honey's these days.

I'm sure there are tons of babes on your mall expeditions, though.

Most people (hopefully) who buy a Merc G can afford to fix it I would imagine, i mean a 100k+ truck, im sure they can afford the repair bills as well. not to mention they would probably only keep it for a few years.

I think people are just blinded by brand loyalty, its the same on any vehicle-specfic forum.

A lot of people talk about flex here because the Jeep is the predominant rock crawling rig, but there is more to 4x4 than rock crawling. Other very important factors are weight capacity, comfort, tow rating, engine power and reliability and availability of parts. The remark before about how other country's have no freedom and therefore Jeep wins was just lol. The Rubicon probably IS the best 4x4 in the world out of the box, but it certainly doesn't win in every category. How could it or any other vehicle for that matter?

I happen to like competition as it drives innovation. I don't get the hostility really.

due to the baseline prices and amount of aftermarket mods available for jeeps i dont really think you can get anything noticeably better.

Ok, be honest, is a JK a "hard core" 4x4?

If I think of my own definition of hard core, then NO in stock form.
But with mods YES. Even said, I believe the JK platform is superior to anything else I could find "sold in the US" to own and build. Even with massive mods, the cost is less than those others mentioned.
IMO - true hard core would send us shopping in military grade stuff with Rockwells, etc.

I have enjoyed the banter on this thread

I was motoring down the expressway today, started thinking about this thread. Cruising along at 75, AC on, nice stereo sounds. Jeep tracking like a dream. Not too much noise. Stable handling, steering, brakes. Getting (all things relative) decent MPG. Was looking at other vehicles on the road, thinking.

And I thought about the fact that I could turn off onto a trail (or really, no trail), shift to 4-lo, lock up the axle(s) if I had to, and go through quite a bit before I got stopped.

So, ya...out of the box the Wrangler is hard to beat in the USA at least, for versatility. A combination of streetability and offroad worthiness. Does that make it more complex and fragile than old stuff? Ya.

The vehicle below, for sale in NM for 20k....might be fun when you got there, but the expressway drive might suck;
