Default Help! My Jeep is making a ticking noise and I can't figure out why.

Hey guys. I'm new to the Jeep world so please be gentle but I have a problem. I have a 2009 Sahara 4x4 automatic that is making a ticking noise somewhere underneath it. I noticed that when I am driving that you don't hear the ticking noise but when I let off of the gas that it sounds like a baseball card in bicycle spokes. It is a fast ticking sound. It doesn't do it when the vehicle is idling or moving, it's just when I let off of the gas. The differential fluid is full and there were no metal shavings in the fluid. I'm at a loss here! Could it be a U joint or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Is it an automatic or manual? Is it lifted if so how high?

As for the noise, one common cause could be the transfer case cable vibrating. If you follow the cable it goes right under the bottom of your dash and could be vibrating against the metal framework of the dash. A short piece of rubber hose cut so you can wrap it around the cable has worked for a lot of people.

Other causes could be anything really haha.
Shift knob vibrating is also common.
Could just be noisy lifters as well. The thinner oil they recommend doesn't do much for quieting down some of the engine chatter.

Mine is making a similar sound. Like a thin plastic cup is being tapped on and coming from the front of the shifter area where the dash meets it. Been driving me crazy for a week or two.
Mine happens when I'm just rolling too, so it may or may not be the same. cut engine and coast and I can still hear it.

Check and make sure none of your spark plugs have come loose. I had this ticking problem and the cause was a loose spark plug. I tightened it up and problem solved.

Make sure that there haven't been any evil geniuses in the area. Sounds like a ticking time bomb.
