HELP... high temperature on Jk
#11
i think that reference to the overheating was to me.
this was result of mud in the radiator. About 2 weeks prior to this overheating, I had taken the Jeep offroad, and ofcourse there was mud that had gotten into the radiator. ok. mud completely COVERED the radiator.
I was near a river, so I stopped and rinsed the radiator out the best I could, and after leaving, I stopped at AutoZone and used their water hose to blow more out. and again, when I got home, I flushed it out even more.
I rinsed out the entire radiator and A/C condensor the best I could. 2 weeks later (!) it overheated as the pic shows. I ran the heater. it pulled the heat down alot.
I took it in to the dealer and the only thing he found was that a section of the radiator at the top behind the upper core support was still covered completely in mud. About a 2-3" tall section across the radiator. You can see this by removing the plastic cover that runs over the top of the radiator. Airflow is minimal here anyway... but apparently if the conditions are right, it's plenty to overheat the engine.
Since then, I have removed the plastic airdam below the bumper and the plastic frame cover below the grill. I have not modified the plastic guard or cover that surrounds the bottom of the radiator. I have not been offroad though because the place I had been going is now closed off. It has not even hinted at overheating.
A lengthy discussion that the head mechanic and I had was interesting. He suggests that if you get mud in the radiator, clean it out with the engine running. You cant run high pressure water through it, because it will bend the fins (which most of us know), but when the fan comes on HI, it pulls a signifigant amount of air through the radiator. Combine that air flow with the water and it will help.
We also both agreed that the cooling system seems to be under-engineered for the JK. I never had my ZJ overheat. I had forgotten something. My ZJ is a 98 with the 4.0 6. According to everything I have looked up, the 98 ZJ used the same radiator as the 5.2 ZJ. The 5.9 was only different radiator. Basically, that means that in 98 the cooling system was "over-engineered" for the 4.0, which gives it superior cooling ability over the older 4.0 cooling systems.
Burnsville offroad can assist you in ordering a custom Griffin radiator if you need it. The type of wheeling you do will dictate whether or not you need it. It is on my shopping list... i just cant afford it for a while.
