From egmcartech.com:

Early next year, Chrysler will start selling a diesel-powered 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee in Europe. However, it has no plans to bring the diesel powered Cherokee to the United States. According to Phil Jansen, the Grand Cherokee’s chief engineer, a diesel version is “an open question because the business case has to make sense.”

One of the main issues for not bringing the diesel version to the U.S. is because Americans may not accept the extra price premium for the diesel over the gasoline model.
“It is expensive,” Jansen said. While he did not give an estimate, Automotive News says that some urea-system diesels have a price premium of up to $4,000.
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel for Europe is powered by a 3.0L V6 diesel unit by VM Motori.

Seems like it would be easy to just sell some in the US since they will make them for other countries.

Now you need to manufacture diesels in the US with a UREA system. It's an additive that reduces nitrogen oxide in exhaust. This is an added cost to manufacture plus an added cost to keep filling up UREA (although you may only need to top off the UREA ever 3-5K miles)

It's up to Fiat now...if they want to pass the cost over to us.

My problem was a pipe on the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Assembly. They have to replace the whole assembly but the part has to come from the US (where I am at the moment!!!) and will take 2 weeks to arrive back in Australia.
The DPF is said to be way better than the UREA system, and I don't think we will see Urea downunder (except as fertiliser!)
