The 3.5 is awful wide, turbos on both side and down plenty low. Would make fording water a challenge if it would even fit in the engine compartment. Where there is a will, there is a way...

Diesel
The engine, a four-cylinder 2.8 litre turbodiesel sourced from VM Motori, needs a decent prod to get the Wrangler moving too.

The VM 2.8L CRD from the U.S. version Jeep KJs (05-06) will reliably put down 400 lb./ft. of torque at 1,600 RPM with nothing more than a Green Diesel Engineering turbo kit. That will easily outpull a Ford gas EcoBoost engine with it's lower torque, will get better fuel economy, will be easier and cheaper to find and swap in, and will keep your ride all Mopar.

Im sure when they get around to direct injecting and turbocharging the pentastar it will put up similar numbers. It was designed with those additions in mind. When that happens I would be most hemi chryslers will be dropped, except for SRTs and Ram trucks.

Your right if I am changing to a different style it would be an LS any day. Good low end torque and decent fuel mileage. I dont think I would want a twin turbo engine for slow speed off road driving.

Only problem is the ecoboost in the Explorer is a twin-turbo 4 cylinder, that does not have the performance specs mentioned in the earlier post. The ecoboost in the Flex and F150 are the 6 cylinder with much better performance (especially the F150).

Eh while I agree with you on an LS motor, modern turbo engines have come a long way with better management of small turbo large turbo configs and variable vane turbos. Drive a 335i and its nearly impossible to notice any lag and the boost comes on in a very manageable and linear fashion. They also have the added benefit of being better at elevation than NA motors.

The other issue with the ecoboost is the lack of a powersteering pump. There was a write up in four wheeler or one of those mags on building up a new f150 for ultimate adventure and the issues they had with the engine... Where there's a will (and the appropriate amount of money), there is a way!
