First Aid Kits?
#21
I figured I'd revisit this topic since I've made some headway in it and I consider safety to be very important. Having talked to Doc at Springtale Solutions I decided to order his M-PAC MOLLE system for the tail gate of my Jeep.
I've replaced the smaller pack with thier First Aid/Med Bag.
The bag comes unfilled and I plan to hook up with my EMS/EMT friend on Friday to supply up. The bag itself comes in two pieces. The first piece is a square piece of nylon with velcro loop material attacted to three straps, two rear and one front. The rear straps hook to the MOLLE carrier. The front strap closes over the bag. The bag itself has velcro hook material on the back to attach it to the "base plate" if you will.
Basically to remove the bag you undo one clasp and pull the bags handle. It tears away from the rack leaving the retention piece in place. That way you can get to the scene quickly.
I plan on turning the other bag into my Bug Out Bag. I will put a couple MRE's, some survival tools, a Gerber camp ax, and some water purification tablets in there. I will also try to find a MOLLE bag for an eTool that I can strap to it. That bag has a shoulder strap that can be used to carry the bag when it's not on the rack. So should I have to leave the vehicle, I don't have to leave my supplies. All in all a very good solution IMHO.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I have lots of other Molle gear and wanted to put that onto my tailgate. One of the many todos.

I have, probably, 6 or 7 first aid kits, mostly from BCBSNC, given out free for exercising. I have them in all my vehicles. In the JK it is in the storage area in the back under the floor. Here is a good hint... if they leave you too long in the ER, or even the doctors office, it is a great place to re-supply your kit. Scapels, stitches, hemostats, burn packs, bug bite oitments, etc...the works...I have actually used the scalpel and the stitches at work...good stuff

I've got an extra Army IFAK I was issued that I've got mounted to the M-PAC rack on the tailgate. It's got all the good trauma goodies in it like tourniquets, israeli bandages, NPA, gloves...good TCCC stuff.
I also keep a Smith & Wesson seatbelt cutter/window punch tool on the B-Pillar just above my seat belt swivel. Never know when I'll need it for myself or someone else.

I can't say I condone what is basically theft from a hospital.
I've never heard of BCBSNC before. When I first read it I thout it was NBC/CBR.

OK I gotta ask this.
Being fairly new to Jeeping, Iv been thinking about a First Aid kit for mine.
I saw the one that Cool Tech has.
Would that be ok for trails or something else?
Iv also noticed most have a fire extinguisher. What size and where would be a good place to mount it on a 09 JK Unlimited?
Thanks.

The Cool Tech kit seems to be a good place to start. It has a couple things in there I don't think are really nessicary and is missing a couple (like Ace bandages) but on the whole seems suited to cover most minor trauma. I like that it has a cool pack.
I don't know that I'd store it in the rear storage area though. What if you have gear in the trunk? How are you going to get to it in an emergency? That's why I really like the M-PAC rack. You open the tail gate and it's RIGHT THERE. I just need to find a patch that says First Aid on it that I can strap to mine. Here's what's in mine.
2x 5"x4ft Ace Bandages w/ Clips
2x 5"x3ft sterile gauze
6x 4"x4" sterile gauze
4x Pairs non-latex gloves
20x alcohol wipes
20x iodine wipes
20x standard band-aid
1x package Quick Clot
1x tube anti-bacterial cream
1x 2" wide roll surgical tape
1x Israeli Emergency Bandage
1x Pair trauma scissors
1x Pair Hemostats
Things I need:
1x Eppie Pin (emergency treatment for allergic reactions)
10x Burn cream wipes
2x Molle skin pads

Skippman, while the epi pen is useful, it is a lot of expense for something that expires so quickly. They cost around $50 each, come in 2 packs, require a prescription (so if some zealous attorney came after you when you used it, you're hosed), and have to be kept in a normal temperature, not in a hot vehicle or a cold fridge. Hopefully if anyone riding needed one, they would already have their own (not helpful for a first time event though).

You're right on the temperature extremes though and I'd forgotten about that until you mentioned it.
As for being trained, I've intentions to enroll in an EMS course this fall. I've gone through Red Cross first aid training and CERT training, but neither are anywhere as comprehensive as a college level EMT class would be.
