Exhaust options
Hello Friends,
I am itching to put a bad arse exhaust on my JK , but I am a pragmatist and I know it will be too loud with the soft top.
Can Y'all recommend something that will get a bit more noise than stock but not wake the neighbors when I pull away to work in the morning?
Thanks friends.

I am running the MBRP cat-back offroad exhaust, but last year I swapped the muffler with a flowmaster HP-2. The MBRP piping is still being used.
It is a good semi-quiet setup. The HP-2 is quieter than the original MBRP, I really like it.

I did the dynomax competition exahust and honestly its too loud for me. I bought it because I liked how it mounted and got rid of the trashcan in back but the sound is a tad more than I want but no so loud that I was willing to return it.

Welcome to the forum Wheel. I have the Banks monster axle back exhaust. Its stainless steel const.(no rust). The set-up retains the factory resonator. No in cab drone* What I like about it is when normal driving it has a nice rumble(wont wake the neighbors), but when you put yur foot into it...hang on-thats when you hear the monster. It growls loud enough to scare wild bears away! I like it & would recommend the banks exhaust (& cold air intake as well) ;-) Also~bout a 2 MPG gain.

I remember doing some similar research prior to installation of my cat-back set up. You should be able to find some decent sound bites on YouTube - keep in mind that not everyone has good recording equipment and/or skills. But it's a good way to kill some time, drink a few beers and still "do research"
I'm running the Banks CAI, PowerAid TBS and Cat-back exhaust "Monster" system in my 07 and I have been very satisfied. Installation was straightforward and easy. The only hard part was removal of the stock exhaust (difficult to remove one of the bolts (needed smaller hands) and one of the hangars). While not empirical, it felt like a huge difference in performance! Yes, it's a tad louder and there is the "whistle" from the TBS, but that happens when the stock air-box and all the sound baffling is removed. it's not bad with the top off and/or if you've got gnarly tires (currently sporting AT's so yes, I suppose I can hear it if I listen for it). The 3.8 will never sound like a V8, but the Banks system has a somewhat throatier sound than other systems, and it's better than stock - far better than the soup-can junk on a lot of "tuner" cars IMO.
MPG's is/was better than stock but I don't recall the numbers. I get 18+MPG (going off memory, I want to say I get17-18 city/21-22+ highway).

I've been searching around for a new muffler as well. I like the dual out setup, but I also do not want anything loud. I know the 2 dont go hand in hand. Really more than anything I despise drone inside the vehicle. My buddy has a 2010 2 door and he added a Magnaflow muffler, and it definitely made it a little louder (not sure which one he got). His is probably a tad louder than I would want. We looked under both Jeeps (mine is a 14 Unlimited) and noticed his does not have a resonator, where mine does. Of course we have different engines, his 3.8 to my 3.6, and I wonder if that would make any sound difference. I am toying with the Dynomax muffler, since it is inexpensive, and if I did not like it its not a big loss of $$. Sound clip give a good idea of outside noise, but interior noise never comes across as true when watching those. I know on other rides I have made interior clips and they always seems quieter in the video. Any thoughts?

Yep; to keep drone in cab away, retain the factory resonator. Whichever muffler you choose. And leave yur windows up w/cloaking device engaged.( thata way the drone will not see you* & flyover.)

Most mufflers are too loud for my taste, yet the exhaust muffler is way to quiet. Brett Woods from JeepSWAG had the same complaint, so in the end eventually designed his own muffler after rejecting virtually every available muffler out there. His is a nice, quiet note. It's there, but it's not mall-crawler-never-been-on-anything-more-challenging-than-a-muddy-dirt-road-pick-up-truck loud. I highly recommend it. Couple problems, however:
1. It wasn't well received.
2. As a consequence of 1, he never made a version for the Pentastar. He tested the 3.8 muffler on a 3.6 and wasn't happy with it, so decided unless he saw demand (IOW, people ask him if he'd make the muffler), he had no intention of producing one.
3. It's very expensive. But, unlike the other mufflers out there, it's 100% stainless steel--even the welds and clamps. Completely, 100% SS.
4. It requires moving the evaporative canister to make room for the muffler, which is relocated up high on the driver's side.
If you'd like to hear the muffler, here's a video of a recent trip I took. The GoPro footage is in my Jeep with that muffler. You can hear some highway and some off-road.
