I was in the same boat you are in before and I sold my TJ for a more economical ride and regretted it instantly! I went for 6 years without a Jeep and I finally got my new Jk. Yes, I am in outside sales as well and travel a lot and don't get great gas mileage...but I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't gamble...this is my vice! I'll spend the extra $$ money on gas before I'll ever give up my Jeep again! Don't do it!

I made the same mistake. I traded my first jeep ( 2007 Jk Sahara) moded with 35s for a Tacoma. I said better MPG, More power, Still capable off road< and way more room. It was cool at first, lifted and threw some 33s on. But after about 6 months I missed the jeep. Starting lurking on the forum again and wishing I had never traded it in. Ended up trading that in for my current JKU. Biggest mistake ever. i could of had the 2 door paid off by now. All the trade did was cost me money.. But at least I am happy.

I remember being a kid and my uncle had a CJ. He loved that thing. kept it clean, it was his baby. I remember him having to get rid of it because it had too many problems. 2 months later he bought it back from the guy he sold it to for twice the price he sold it.

I remember my dad giving him shit about the jeep saying he cant believe he would spend that much to get it back. He simply said. " you dont understand, there is no feeling like driving a jeep. It gives you a feeling that no other vehicle can"...

That said, I feel the same way. Its fun to drive, it can take you places others cant, and its a vehicle your confident with no matter what lies ahead of you. It truely is a way of life. And I wouldnt have it any other way.

I guess my real problem is how many more miles can I get away driving it be for I have to put a motor or trans in it? Matinence cost, gas, payments....... Throw a motor and or a trans in on that it now becomes too much. If I continue driving the way I am the jeep will have 275,000 miles on it before I pay it off at that point what will ever be worth but sentimental value?

I can t afford a cheap car on top of my 2 JKUR payments. Oh yeah did I mention I have 2 jeeps my wife drives one too and we only owe $8000 on it

My thought was since we might be moving to Arkansas little rock soon I heard there is some really good wheeling in the south. If I buy a truck I can Focus on my dream of building a buggy. Maybe even a rock bouncer if I get the promotion I should be up for.

Thoughts?

My JKU on 37 as a daily driver and love driving it. I gotta say if I compare my jeep on 37's with the TeraFlex LCG long arm kit speed bumps and fox shocks Tera front housing with + caster ( it's at 8.5 degrees) military rhd draglink flip kit and alloy USA chromoly ball joints and RCV's it drives much better than my wife's jeep on 35's 2.5" rubicon express bb kit with bilstiens and the geometry kit.

The commuter car is a horrible idea. Lets say you buy one for $4000. Thats alot of gas. Insurance lets say 30-60 per month ( idk your history. I pay $44 full cover). And say new car gets 28-30 mpg where as your jeep is 16. 45ish% increase. So youll be saving 200ish gas per month. So lets say you pay $400 in gas a month with jeep. You save $180 in gas and spend $40 on insurance. Net saving is $140. Take $4000 buy in and itll take itll about 3 years to recoup your investment not including maintenance on beater car. Keep the jeep and enjoy it.

Yea but your not factoring in maintenance savings on the jeep. Especially with wearing down 37s a lot faster making you but tires sooner. Would actually recoup his money a lot faster.

37's yearly at $429 per tire. Last year I had to buy wheels because I had 3 bent wheels

I would disagree; he mentioned 275k miles when paid off. You're not factoring in wear and tear.

Granted but still maintenancing the beaters too. Factor in older beater will most likely have issues. $4000 car will prob need brakes so there goes $600. Need new tires? Just bought car tires yesterday. Cost $560 mounted. Michiclins before that where $850. Even if hey buys tires every 2 years on jeep thats takes 4 years to equal cost of beater. Lots of stuff coulda went wrong with a 10-12 year old $4000 dollar beater car in 4 years. Trust me ive done the math on this with me and several friends cause we all thought about doing this
