Dumb idea?
I own a 2010 JKU with 10,000 miles on it. I'm thinking of selling it and getting a 2012 JK.
The plan would be to start stripping the mods from it (teraflex 2.5 lift/smittybilt bumpers and winch/hella foglights/tuffy lockbox - sell the lockbox) and then sell the Jeep. I'd then deploy (Air Force) for six months and enjoy not having a car payment during that time. When I get back I'd buy the JK and put the mods on it.
I bought the JKU because my TJ was starting to consistently have issues and the wife was preggers. Since owning the Jeep my little girl has ridden in about five times. So, I dont really need the extra room. I've heard that the engines in the 2012 would make it worth it.
So, is it a retarded idea?

Thats what I thought too. I guess I just needed to hear others concur. I'm going to go test drive a 2012 tomorrow. I'll also do my 'rock-bottom' math. The biggest con to all this is if I decide the lowest I'll take is 26K for my Jeep and I dont get that, I'll have to put everything back on. That will be a royal pain.

Back in the late 90's when I deployed overseas, I put my new car that was less than a year old into storage. All the car did was sit and depreciate while I paid storage fees and insurance. I though I'd knock out a year of the loan, but I just paid for a car I wasn't using. If the wife is not going to drive it, then I would do as you thought.
That is one thing I'd do over again if I could.

Ohhhhh! I just went and test drove one. I was surprised by the 'vroom'. I spun the tires on accident. And in a surprise move, the wife suggested that I just leave the wheels, tires, and lift on my current Jeep and buy better ones for the new Jeep. I warned her it would be about three thousand. She said "well, you should just do that". After I woke up from passing out I have her a hug.

Swapping a JKU for a JK? I would not think twice I would swap any JKU for any JK but going from a JKU with a 3.8 to a JK with a 3.6 is an absolute no brainier. Go for it and enjoy that short wheelbase dream machine!!!
