Talking Driving Across the USA in a Jeep - Sights to See, Places to Go?

Hi all,
My wife and I are planning a month-long excursion from Savannah, GA to Yellowstone Nat Park this summer.
We're packing up our 07 JK unlimited X 4x4 with camping gear, two mountain bikes, and a beer cooler.

We have no schedule. All we have is a destination and a Garmin GPS to get us there.

Any recommendations for campgrounds, sights-to-see, or stories about your own cross-country trips are welcome and appreciated!

Sounds like fun. My recommendation would be, where possible, to take back roads (top down, preferably) and stay off the Interstates.

I second that. Back roads are the way to go. Seen one interstate, seen them all.

Also going slower in the JK will get you way better mileage.

One thing that came to mind is a book called, "Weird USA". The book chronicles weird places across the country. I have the "Weird Georgia" book and it's very interesting.

If at all possible, you gotta make a huge detour and see Ouray. Or at least talk to the local on the board here (Gravel Gertie??) who lives in Jackson Hole to find some cool local scenic trails.

Sounds awesome! im gonna do that some day!
take all the items and some more just in case...
I would add: first aid kit, fire ext.,oil and other fluids for the jeep, flashlight, batteries, emergency flares, reflective triangles, spare fuses, jumper cables, gloves, hand cleaner and clean rags, some tools, portable compressor and plug kit, tire gauge, help sign, tow strap, AAA card and EZ-pass......
what else? anyone?

There now you've seen all you need to see of the Mitchel SD Corn Palace.

The frecoes are made of corn.

Also don't waste your time in Deadwood SD. Nothing but a big tourist trap.

But you must MUST! drive the badlands.
