Default Double gas mileage by adding acetone?

I saw a video on metacafe.com that states that if you add 1-3 ounces of acetone to your gasoline to every ten gallons. it will near double your gas mileage...

Has anybody ever heard of this? Has anybody ever tried this?

There are countless webpages about it and articles but I am curious.

Does it even seem feasible to ya'll?

Feel free to post facts/opinions and the like in reference to this topic.

Double gas mileage would be awesome but I doubt its true...

Heck double gas mileage would almost make it worth it to own a HUMMER! ... not.

It will marginally increase it because it increases oxygen concentration of the fuel. However, it will dissolve any rubber fuel lines or gas tank liners. Take your pick. This ranks up with with cheap capacitors and "vornado" type things that are claimed to increase mileage and power.

Every forum I have been a member of, from Ford, GM, and Toyota, this topic comes up. Some say yes, others say not a good idea. Here is a good read http://www.chemicalforums.com/index....;threadid=2517 , or you can Google adding acetone as a fuel additive. If it does cause damage to lines, sensors, etc. warranty claims might be a problem if they knew what happened.

Once again, the Mythbusters ride to the rescue...

They (Mythbusters on Discovery Channel) tested this scientifically and extensively. The results? They saw negligible gains; i.e., nowhere NEAR 2x gas mileage. On the other hand, you will cause damage to your fuel-line components, which will end up costing you FARRRR more than whatever *TINY* amount of gas you saved.

Good question, but save yourself the time, aggravation, and damage to your Jeep - it's just not worth it.

Ah ha, now you I know where I saw the tests on TV. They tried all of the fuel saving devices they could find, none where worth the money that I can remember

We use acetone to clean metal parts of grease and tar etc. I think it would clean any oil on your cylinder walls. not a good thing.

now if youre trying to bump octane then thats a different story but you would use toulene or xylene i used this in a 9 to 1 ratio (gas to xylene); low enough that you didnt have to add other agents to keep things functioning properly, and it worked great during the hot summer months on my turbo Audi motor.

my brother-in-law to be informed me yesterday that he knows a few people that attempted this...and screwed up sensors and all sorts of stuff. And got no benefit whatsoever.

And nah I was NEVER going to try it unless some really known company with a good reputation said it worked. But if it did I'm sure we all would have heard by now.

I was just curious. Thanks for all your input!!
