Fiat does make a lot of diesels, but its my understanding that they are mainly 4 cylinder models. Do they have anything that would be a good application for the JK? Maybe something out of one of their delivery vans?
Fiat currently builds a turbo 4-banger that makes 170 hp and 265 pound feet of torque.

Variable Geometry Turbo - DPF
B DS. 2000 JTD E5
Bore x Stroke: 83x90,4 mm
Power: 170 hp @ 4000 rpm
Torque: 265 ft/lb @ 1750 rpm

Very similar to this Euro JK:
Jeep JK vs Land Rover Defender... Jeep wins.

With all due respect, that's not really an improvement IMO. It has considerably less HP with only ~25 more lb ft of torque. It would have to have a lot more power, or at least torque, than that for me to consider it. :cents:

The low end torque would be nice, but it wouldn't make me want to run out and trade mine in on one.

They aren't fast by any means, but they have the same torque output as the 5.7l semi hemi. They do have respectable performance numbers, they're on par with the 4.7l V8 0-60.

I've driven quite a few of them and I like the way they drive, they have a lot of power off the line and are smooth and quite for a diesel. Its a nice, modern clean diesel.

FWIW, the 3.0l does have a 50 state legal version, its just not available on the Jeeps. Gotta love Daimler...

I'd love to have that MPG, and the low end torque would be nice. However, I'd assume that the performance number are similar to the CRD KJ? If so, its not any better of a performer than my 3.8l.

I'm getting 18 around town, but that 29 hwy is incredible. I only get 21-22.

The diesel in the Euro and Aussie JK are completely different to the CRD KJ, I believe the newer 09 models are up even more on torque at 340 lbft. The CRD KJ is 160hp & 295 lbft. not alot on paper but when you factor in the diff ratios it can be a huge difference!!
i think those figures are pretty good if you compare them to the new Toyota 4.5l V8 diesel at 200hp and 330 lbft in a vehicle weighing nearly half as much again as a JK

what is needed is a high power diesel, say 220bhp at least, with 300+ lb/ft of torque, this would be a great combination in the JK, driving modern european diesels is great now, there super quick and give great mpg.

These are "car" engines, I doubt they will find their way into heavy vehicles.

The IVECO range of engines offers a tre liter, mounted on the Campagnola/Massif 4x4, which is a revamped version of an old Land Series built in Spain by Santana under license first, and then on their own.

I have only seen it and heard it, and it seems niiice. But I am afraid it might not pass forthcoming Euro 5 emissions' regulations. I however consider it at par - if not superior due to the torque curve - with the current CRD 2.8 engine.
The V6 Merc would have been wonderful though, I test-drove the GC and it is a fantastic engine.

I post some links so you can see engine data, there is not a lot in English though

I have driven the J8 with the 2.8 diesel, and it was much nicer than the 3.8 V6. Also the gas mileage is much better. The dealership that had is said they could get that engine into my JK, but I just can't justify a $30,000 engine swap.
